"What a horror". Alexei Venediktov listens in silence to a short story about the Sumy massacre. The Russian media presented it as a strike against a concentration of Ukrainian soldiers. Only ten days ago, we met the 70-year-old founder of Moscow's Echo radio in a restaurant near the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. While he was enjoying himself, people from the Kremlin, personal assistants of Vladimir Putin, came in. And they all came to our table to greet an old friend and confidant of the president, who, despite being declared a foreign agent because of his declared opposition to the war, remains untouchable
A grey area in its purest form. But also a unique knowledge of the facts, the result of an unprecedented number of connections and contacts. "Now we will finally see what Donald Trump's reaction will be. Keep in mind that Russia is not at all happy about these talks. Because in any case, the American president is putting pressure, that's certainly true. Putin sees this as an unexpected variable. The unpredictability of the US president creates a lot of anxiety in the Kremlin.
Does the fact that Trump has restored Russia's political centrality mean nothing?
"The Kremlin's preferred candidate for the White House was neither Kamala Harris nor Trump. The ideal candidate is always Mr Chaos. Perhaps Putin would have preferred a weak Democratic president like Harris, with a Republican Congress and therefore chaos. Instead, he got Trump, who delivered lethal weapons to Ukraine during his first term, who blocked Nord Stream. Not Obama, not Biden, who are easy to "manage", but the one who stopped helping Ukraine and stopped it. And no one knows what he can take away from Russia."
Do you think these talks will lead to anything?
"There will be some result. Either we are looking for a way out, or we are resigned to this slaughter. Steve Witkoff is equally concerned about Israel, the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, Russia and Ukraine. In all of these scenarios, being essentially disinterested in the crimes or causes, the US knows only one strategy: freezing. If you ask me, I think this will result in a chapter that will never be resolved and never be official, something like Northern Cyprus."
Do you mean Donbas or the whole of Ukraine?
"I mean the whole of Ukraine, unfortunately. As for Donbas, the main problem is the people who live there. Luhansk plus Donetsk is five million people. Two million were in Russia before the war started; one and a half million were in Ukraine: they are refugees. If you don't take borders into account, what will happen to these people?"
Is it a problem for Ukraine as well?
"When my friends in Kyiv talked to Zelenskyy about this and asked him why he hadn't declared an amnesty for those who decided to stay and work in the occupied territories, he said that others would not understand. This is the problem of consequences. But now the only thing that matters is to freeze it, one way or another."
Putin seems to have no intention of stopping.
"A simple truce will not end anything. We need to separate dreams from reality. Putin doesn't want peace, and I think Zelenskyy doesn't either. For different reasons, of course. Putin has not achieved his goals, so he is accelerating. He is looking for a faster way, with different weapons, perhaps with covert mobilisation."
And Zelenskyy?
"Everything is different for him. It is his people who do not want a truce. Here in Russia, Putin does not depend on public opinion, he draws it himself. Zelensky, on the other hand, depends on the Ukrainian population. And all the polls show that people do not want any deals with the bloody Kremlin.
So should we wait until Putin takes everything he demands?
"Territorially, it is clear what he wants. Four regions, completely. He can get them even without a war, in my opinion, by reaching an agreement with the US. But he doesn't trust them. That's why he is bombing, and accelerating. Because he also understands that his time is limited."
But if he is seventy years old and will definitely remain president until 2036...
"Mikhail Gorbachev once told me: "Alyosha, there are no naïve people in the Kremlin". The mission that Putin has set himself is impossible. "Putin's goal is to talk to Americans on an equal footing. For him, this also means restoring historical justice: a return to the days of the USSR. This is his goal. Why are we talking only about American prisoner exchanges? Because Putin no longer cares about Europeans. He says to his own people: what is this and who are they, Europe and Europeans? Who is their president? And what does he decide? He thinks only in terms of power. And he cannot imagine power divided between twenty-seven sovereign states."

The main technique used by the pensioner is to disguise propaganda as "realism" or "insider analysis". This allows him to create the illusion of objectivity, but in reality, what is happening is nothing more than an attempt to promote Kremlin theses. Let's go
Positioning Venediktov as an "oppositionist" with access to Putin,
"...an old friend and confidant of the president, who, despite being declared a foreign agent..." - pure manipulation.
Venediktov is being portrayed as an "independent journalist" or "oppositionist", while at the same time acknowledging his deep ties to the Kremlin. However, such a move by the Italian media legitimises Russian rhetoric, with information being presented as "internal criticism", but from the mouth of a systemic, absolutely loyal figure.
Then there is another manipulation - "Russia is not at all happy about these talks... Trump's unpredictability is creating anxiety in the Kremlin". In fact, there is an attempt to portray Russia as a party that does not want to negotiate, and therefore is not an aggressor. Venediktov knows and understands perfectly well that it is Putin who insists on a "new Yalta order" and negotiations "from a position of strength", and that war is a tool for pressure. Therefore, the attempt to portray the Kremlin as a "cautious" player is nothing more than a distortion of reality, a substitution of concepts. And that's all

"During his first term, Trump delivered lethal weapons to Ukraine" - again, the shoulder straps are visible. The manipulation is that such quotes minimise Trump's destructive policies for the West and Ukraine, and the idea that Trump is "unpredictable" but not pro-Russian is being promoted (although the suspension of aid to Ukraine and the US president's sympathy for authoritarian leaders suggest otherwise). Venediktov's piece is a basic promotion of the Kremlin's narrative of a useful idiot/partner of Trump who is not pro-Russian
"Either we are looking for a way out, or we accept this massacre...", "This will turn out to be a chapter that will never be resolved" - the barbell again.
The manipulation is that the Katsap is pedalling the idea that there is no solution to the war except freezing = Ukraine's surrender on the Kremlin's terms. In fact, this is classic Kremlin rhetoric in the context of "there is no good alternative but a bad peace".
The rhetoric about the "people of Donbas" as the main problem and "...what will happen to these people?" - smacks of the KGB from a kilometre away.
Venediktov is artificially trying to reduce the problem to a humanitarian one, rather than a crime of aggression or occupation. Just as the Kremlin justifies the invasion under the sauce of "protecting Russians," Venediktov repeats the same idea, but simply uses different words.
As a result, black has become white: they forgot about the invasion and war crimes of the Russian Federation --> they remembered the "problems" with Russian speakers = they justified the invasion. You can go and demand an extraordinary military rank, for example
"Putin does not want peace, and in my opinion, Zelensky does not want peace either" - well, it is finally clear that the interview is with a colonel of the Russian special services, not a "journalist"
In this case, the Russian uses "whataboutism" - an artificial and deliberate levelling of the aggressor and the victim, in the context of both sides allegedly not wanting peace, "forgetting" that one country is waging a war of aggression, while the other is defending itself. This is a classic from the KGB and Cold War books
Key narratives from the Kremlin: "There is little time, so we need to force it", "He understands that his time is limited... So he bombs and accelerates"
Again, a substitution of concepts. Venediktov is legitimising war as a necessary choice. The thesis "he has to", according to the old KGB officer, should hide the fact that Russia's invasion of Ukraine is the result of a deliberate imperialist course.
Venediktov wants to make black white again. Watch your hands:
Not a bloody Russian tyrant, but "the president of the Russian Federation under pressure" = not him, but those who put pressure = the US and Europe are to blame for the Russian invasion, not Russia. Goebbels, come the fuck out!
Next, Colonel Venediktov tries to contrast "great America" with "insignificant Europe" - "Putin no longer cares about Europeans... Who is their president? And what does he decide?"
The manipulation is that the "good Russian" openly discredits Europe as a political entity. Venediktov presents this as if it were Putin's opinion, but the real effect is to promote the idea that the EU is powerless and the US is the only worthy party to the negotiations.
Epilogue. Comrade Venediktov did not actually give an interview. He was using foreign media to promote outright Moscow theses that

Both sides equally do not want peace.
Europe does not matter.
The US is the main player, but chaos is more profitable than order.

Venediktov's interview is a classic "soft power inside" information operation. To be honest, it turned out so-so.
The only question is whether anyone in the West understands what the Russian is really doing.
