Bardella = Le Pen 2.0?
On 31 March 2025, a French court handed down a verdict that shook not only Marine Le Pen's political career but also the very essence of the far-right movement in France. According to the court, the leader of the National Rally (RN) is guilty of embezzling EU funds through the fictitious employment of her assistants in the European Parliament.
She was punished: 4 years in prison (2 of them under electronic surveillance), a fine of €100,000 and a 5-year ban on running for office, which took effect immediately.
Although Le Pen has announced that she will appeal, this process does not suspend the sentence. Therefore, even if the higher court changes its decision, it could happen after the election campaign is over. In this case, the political collapse would be irreparable.
The French press writes that Le Pen has three options left:
Appeal acquittal: if the verdict is overturned, Le Pen will be back in the game. But this is unlikely, given the high-profile nature of the case and the scale of the violations.
Confirmation of the sentence: in this case, she will remain out of politics until at least 2030.
Mitigation of the sentence: if the ban is reduced, there is a chance that she will have time to return to active participation in politics by 2027.
Therefore, given the rhetoric and public attitudes towards her, Marine Le Pen has effectively lost her chance to run in 2027, and the party has lost its symbolic figure. As a result, Jordan Bardella, her political heir and former son-in-law, is entering the political scene "almost after the fact".
The French press has long called Bardella Le Pen's "ideal son-in-law". He had a romantic relationship with her niece Nolwen Olivier, but the couple broke up shortly before the European elections. Nevertheless, the Le Pen-Bardella tandem seemed unshakable. Until now.

"Putin is redrawing borders for the sake of a mythical 'Russian world' built on bayonets. A peace deal with the dictator will only push him to new aggression."
He directly refutes the Kremlin's thesis that the West or NATO are to blame for the escalation, and even notes that Le Pen's defeat in 2022 was due to her pro-Russian rhetoric.
However, this new rhetoric has limits. In 2024, as a candidate for prime minister, Bardella told Le Monde that: "He will not send long-range weapons to Ukraine to strike at Russian territory, nor will he send French instructors" if he heads the government.
And on Franceinfo on the day of Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to France, he criticised Macron:
"The transfer of Mirage-2000 aircraft to Ukraine is a worrying decision. Macron is using the war for his campaign. I am in favour of negotiations so that people do not die."
Bardella's red lines on the war in Ukraine are simple:
No long-range weapons;
No strikes on Russian territory;
No participation of the French military in the fighting.
Next to Bardella is Pierre-Romain Thionnet, the head of the National Party's youth wing. It is he who has become the main carrier of the pro-Ukrainian agenda: he publicly supports the Armed Forces; advocates NATO expansion in Eastern Europe; calls the Alliance an "organisation of peace" that "responds to Russian aggression"; accuses Putin of an "ideological attack" and rewriting history regarding Ukraine.
Bardella appointed Tionne as his deputy in the Foreign Affairs Commission, completely replacing its members. Some French media considered this an attempt to "cleanse" the party of the Kremlin's influence.
In 2025, Bardella refused to participate in the Conservative Political Action Conference in the United States (CPAC) after former Trump adviser Steve Bannon made a gesture on stage that looked like a Nazi salute.
Bardella explained his action as follows: "This gesture is a reference to Nazi ideology. I can't be a part of that".
In response, Bannon called him a "little boy, worse than Macron" and said that he was "not worthy to lead France".
By the way, Le Pen was convicted for peacekeepers in Ukraine, but not for the war. In 2025, already as the head of a parliamentary group, Marine Le Pen stated that: "It is madness to send French troops to fight on Ukrainian soil," but she admitted the possibility of participating in a peacekeeping mission under a UN or EU mandate.
But in an interview with CNN (July 2024), she made it clear: Bardella, if she becomes French prime minister, will block any attempts by Macron to send troops to Ukraine: "The prime minister will have the last word. If Bardella says no, the troops will not go."
According to Le Monde, the changes in the National Rally's policy are more declarative than pro-Ukrainian:
RN MPs in the European Parliament still vote against resolutions in support of Ukraine;
Within the party, the influence of pro-Russian figures who are not ashamed of their views remains.

According to the court, the leader of the National Rally (RN) is guilty of embezzling EU funds through the fictitious employment of her assistants in the European Parliament.
She was punished: 4 years in prison (2 of them under electronic surveillance), a fine of €100,000 and a 5-year ban on running for office, which took effect immediately.
Although Le Pen has announced that she will appeal, this process does not suspend the sentence. Therefore, even if the higher court changes its decision, it could happen after the election campaign is over. In this case, the political collapse would be irreparable.
The French press writes that Le Pen has three options left:
Appeal acquittal: if the verdict is overturned, Le Pen will be back in the game. But this is unlikely, given the high-profile nature of the case and the scale of the violations.
Confirmation of the sentence: in this case, she will remain out of politics until at least 2030.
Mitigation of the sentence: if the ban is reduced, there is a chance that she will have time to return to active participation in politics by 2027.
Therefore, given the rhetoric and public attitudes towards her, Marine Le Pen has effectively lost her chance to run in 2027, and the party has lost its symbolic figure. As a result, Jordan Bardella, her political heir and former son-in-law, is entering the political scene "almost after the fact".
The French press has long called Bardella Le Pen's "ideal son-in-law". He had a romantic relationship with her niece Nolwen Olivier, but the couple broke up shortly before the European elections. Nevertheless, the Le Pen-Bardella tandem seemed unshakable. Until now.
Bardella is gradually allegedly changing the political line of the National Assembly (short for "Rassemblement National", which means "National Union" in French), which until recently was openly pro-Russian. In an interview with L'Opinion, he admits:
"It was a collective naivety about Putin's ambitions. Five years ago, it was a different Putin. Now he has invaded Ukraine and is committing war crimes."
In his book Ce que je cherche (November 2024), Bardella describes Russia's aggression even more harshly:
"Putin is redrawing borders for the sake of a mythical 'Russian world' built on bayonets. A peace deal with the dictator will only push him to new aggression."
He directly refutes the Kremlin's thesis that the West or NATO are to blame for the escalation, and even notes that Le Pen's defeat in 2022 was due to her pro-Russian rhetoric.
However, this new rhetoric has limits. In 2024, as a candidate for prime minister, Bardella told Le Monde that: "He will not send long-range weapons to Ukraine to strike at Russian territory, nor will he send French instructors" if he heads the government.
And on Franceinfo on the day of Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to France, he criticised Macron:
"The transfer of Mirage-2000 aircraft to Ukraine is a worrying decision. Macron is using the war for his campaign. I am in favour of negotiations so that people do not die."
Bardella's red lines on the war in Ukraine are simple:
No long-range weapons;
No strikes on Russian territory;
No participation of the French military in the fighting.
Next to Bardella is Pierre-Romain Thionnet, the head of the National Party's youth wing. It is he who has become the main carrier of the pro-Ukrainian agenda: he publicly supports the Armed Forces; advocates NATO expansion in Eastern Europe; calls the Alliance an "organisation of peace" that "responds to Russian aggression"; accuses Putin of an "ideological attack" and rewriting history regarding Ukraine.
Bardella appointed Tionne as his deputy in the Foreign Affairs Commission, completely replacing its members. Some French media considered this an attempt to "cleanse" the party of the Kremlin's influence.
In 2025, Bardella refused to participate in the Conservative Political Action Conference in the United States (CPAC) after former Trump adviser Steve Bannon made a gesture on stage that looked like a Nazi salute.
Bardella explained his action as follows: "This gesture is a reference to Nazi ideology. I can't be a part of that".
In response, Bannon called him a "little boy, worse than Macron" and said that he was "not worthy to lead France".
By the way, Le Pen was convicted for peacekeepers in Ukraine, but not for the war. In 2025, already as the head of a parliamentary group, Marine Le Pen stated that: "It is madness to send French troops to fight on Ukrainian soil," but she admitted the possibility of participating in a peacekeeping mission under a UN or EU mandate.
But in an interview with CNN (July 2024), she made it clear: Bardella, if she becomes French prime minister, will block any attempts by Macron to send troops to Ukraine: "The prime minister will have the last word. If Bardella says no, the troops will not go."
According to Le Monde, the changes in the National Rally's policy are more declarative than pro-Ukrainian:
RN MPs in the European Parliament still vote against resolutions in support of Ukraine;
Within the party, the influence of pro-Russian figures who are not ashamed of their views remains.
Epilogue. In conclusion, we have the following:
Bardella is distancing himself from the Kremlin, but does not want to escalate. He talks about Ukraine's sovereignty but is afraid of long-range weapons. He applauds Zelenskyy but votes against him. And then there are his fellow party members who are pro-Russian.
So I wouldn't rejoice too much in Le Pen's conviction - it's not a given that Bardel won't turn out to be more pro-Russian than his former boss.
