The Cold War in the Balkans. Has it begun?
Serbia and Hungary may form a military alliance in response to the defence agreement between Albania, Croatia and Kosovo
Serbian media report that Belgrade is in talks with Budapest about a possible military alliance. The initiative comes as a reaction to the recent declaration of cooperation (letter of intent) signed in Tirana by the defence ministers of Albania, Croatia and Kosovo.
According to this declaration, the cooperation should contribute to security in Southeast Europe, support the Euro-Atlantic course and strengthen defence ties between the three countries. The main areas of cooperation are as follows:
development of defence and industrial cooperation within the framework of NATO initiatives and the EU's ReArm Europe plan;
joint exercises and increased interoperability;
combating hybrid threats and intelligence sharing;
support for Kosovo's integration into regional security initiatives.
Despite the fact that the declaration is not a formal military alliance (it is a treaty of intent), it was perceived as a challenge in Belgrade. The Serbian press, including the Kurir daily, called the agreement an "anti-Serbian coalition". Political analyst Djordje Vukadinovic said that this was the next stage of systemic pressure on Serbia, which is now taking on a military character.
In response, according to Kurir, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is discussing the creation of a defence alliance with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Although there is no official confirmation of this information, Serbian sources close to the government claim that the talks are already underway.
