The explosion in Policca: accident or Russian sabotage?
On 25 March 2025, another explosion occurred at a machine-building plant in Policske, Czech Republic. One person was seriously injured and all workers were evacuated. Despite the official version of a technical malfunction, the incident draws parallels with previous tragedies at the same plant, as well as the 2014 sabotage in Vrbetice, in which Russian military intelligence was involved.
Is this just a "coincidence" or an attack by Russia on the European military-industrial complex? Let's find out.
The bottom line. At 8:54 a.m., an explosion rocked an ammunition depot on the territory of the STV Group machine-building plant in Policca, Svitava region. According to preliminary police reports, the accident was caused by a technological defect during production. One worker suffered severe multiple injuries and was airlifted to Olomouc University Hospital by helicopter. According to a representative of the medical facility, the victim's life is not in danger, but his injuries are serious.
The local fire service has declared a level three alert out of four possible. Eleven units of equipment, including special Titan and Triton tankers, arrived in Borzhyno, where the complex is located. Drones were used to inspect the explosion site. The area within a 1.5 km radius was cleared, although the town of Polichka was not included in the evacuation zone.
STV Group is one of the key ammunition manufacturers in the Czech Republic, specialising in large-calibre projectiles, military equipment repair and spare parts. The plant is owned by STV Invest, a holding company that leases part of the premises in Poličské strojírny. The company is of strategic importance for both the Czech armed forces and NATO partner countries.
Minister of Defence Jana Černoková stated bluntly: "STV is an important supplier for our army. What has happened cannot leave any of us alone."
This is not the first explosion at STV Group's facility in Polichka. The company's history includes several high-profile incidents:
In September 2015, 320 tonnes of gunpowder exploded. The roof of one of the workshops flew off more than 50 metres. Two employees suffered minor burns.
February 2017 - a series of explosions at the enterprise due to plastic explosives inside a hydraulic press. Nineteen people were injured, including firefighters, three with severe burns. 120 people were evacuated.
The Policka explosion comes less than a year after the official conclusion of the investigation into the 2014 Vrbetycy bombings, when Czech police found that agents of the GRU, unit 29155, known for its subversive operations abroad, were behind the bombing of two ammunition depots.
The scheme in Vrbetytsi included agents infiltrating the warehouses under the guise of inspectors, precise knowledge of the cargo, its routes and final recipients, and explosions synchronised with plans to export weapons to Ukraine.
The investigation confirmed that the attack had a geopolitical context and was part of Russia's hybrid war in Europe. Although there is no evidence of specific sabotage at Polichka, the fact that the company has been vulnerable twice already suggests a clear message
STV Group, according to publicly available data, has been involved in the execution of state defence contracts for the Czech Republic and NATO countries for the past two years. In 2023-2024, the company increased production of ammunition for Ukraine's needs.
Accordingly, this makes it a potential target for Russian hacker groups, for an agent network within Europe, for Russian special forces such as 29155, which have already been operating in the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
The explosion in Polichka calls into question the adequacy of security measures at strategic enterprises of the military-industrial complex, ranging from protection against external intrusion to possible hybrid attack scenarios. In my opinion, this should have become obvious after the events in Vrbjetica: The West is not only in the information zone, but in the literal explosive zone.

The official reaction of the Czech authorities seems to be cautious. Defence Minister Černokova called the incident an "unfortunate coincidence", although she also noted its threatening nature. The police and fire service acted quickly, but the version of a "technological defect" was voiced almost automatically, without publicly exploring alternatives.
The question arises: isn't this a repeat of the situation in 2014, when the version of the "accident" in Vrbetice was publicly refuted only 7 years later?
The incident in Polička is not a wake-up call. The explosions in Polička are the third major incident in 10 years. Vrbetice was a wake-up call. Now it's a siren.
