Putin has bought Hungary. The deal is done
The Hungarian parliament has voted to withdraw from the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court in The Hague. This was announced by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto on 29 April. The withdrawal process is expected to take about a year.
Hungary's withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC) has a number of serious and far-reaching consequences for Hungary itself, as well as for the international legal order and regional security:
Hungary becomes the only EU country to have withdrawn from the ICC, which puts it in opposition to basic European values, including the rule of law and accountability for war crimes.
The withdrawal from the ICC means that Hungary does not officially recognise the arrest warrant for Putin issued in 2023 for the deportation of Ukrainian children. Next. What does the ICC do? It investigates crimes against humanity. But in the new era, it's not just murders or deportations that matter. The ICC is dangerous for officials involved in cyber operations, trade in dual-use technologies, and espionage. Withdrawal from the ICC means opening a parallel jurisdiction in which a "shadow state" can be run on the territory of a legal one, without the risk of international investigation. This is the same principle used by Belarus, Iran and Sudan.
Already, companies affiliated with the Russian military-industrial complex through Armenia and Serbia are registering in Hungary, "Ukrainian" refugees with Russian passports are settling in Hungary, and branches of the Russian Orthodox Church are opening with strange investments in the IT sector and "cultural diplomacy".
Orban is setting a new precedent: The EU can be preserved formally, but the foundations - human rights, international law, and respect for the courts - can be abandoned. Hungary is becoming the first experimental site where the Kremlin is testing whether it is possible to live in two systems, receiving money from Brussels and protection from Moscow.

And, of course, Hungary must withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR): Orban will declare that the ECHR decisions "do not correspond to the sovereign will of the Hungarian people", which will allow him to legalise internal censorship, political arrests and media purges, and ignore complaints from citizens and activists, including Ukrainians who fled the war but oppose the Kremlin.
This will be followed by arrests of Ukrainian activists in Hungary - under the slogan of "banning extremism", repressions will begin against those who organise anti-war or pro-Ukrainian actions. At best, they will be deported, at worst, they will be tried in Hungary or extradited to Russia as a "friendly gesture"
In addition, I'm willing to bet that there will definitely be joint exercises of "anti-terrorist units" with instructors from the Russian Guard.
And the last thing. Hungary may become the first domino stone, after which Serbia, Republika Srpska, most likely Georgia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Venezuela, Azerbaijan, Brazil, African countries and all other friends of Russia will start to reject international jurisdiction, the rule of law and the Nuremberg model of peace.
