A26 instead of ABBA. A little about the Swedish kick in the pants
Sweden is preparing for war with Russia. The Baltic Sea is increasingly turning into the main arena of confrontation between NATO and Moscow, where each country is strengthening its fleet, rearming and making plans for a major war.
Not only Poland, Lithuania or Estonia - even Sweden, which has just joined the Alliance, is already preparing its army for a direct armed conflict with the Kremlin. A large part of the Swedish military has already undergone combat training specifically for the scenario of war with Russia. The government hasʼnt limited itself to the armed forces alone - an official brochure has been distributed throughout the country, explaining to every citizen how to act in the event of a large-scale war. This is a real instruction in case of a Russian invasion.
In 2018, for the first time since the 1960s, Sweden distributed the booklet Om krisen eller kriget kommer - If a Crisis or War Comes. It contains instructions on how to act during bombings. At the time, it looked like an anachronism.
In 2022-2024, after the invasion of Ukraine, this booklet was reprinted, expanded, and updated, and the government began to fund not only civil defence but also mass psychological mobilisation.
In 2024, Sweden abandoned its oldest taboo: not to militarise the Baltic, and joined NATO.
Analysts are not exaggerating. Brian Clark, one of the leading experts at the Hudson Institute, a former adviser to the US Navy, said: "Sweden is capable of closing the Baltic Sea if it wants to - just a combination of submarines and surface fleet is enough."
Meanwhile, Denmark is preparing to purchase dozens of ships, Lithuania has already ordered new strike units, Poland is building frigates and preparing to purchase submarines, and even Estonia, with one of the smallest navies in the world, is planning a radical increase in fleet size.
Why has the Baltic become critically important?

This is not just a defensive strategy for the Swedes, but a strategy of denial of access (A2/AD is when you set up so many traps, missiles, air defence systems and mines in advance that the enemy cannot even approach you - they are stopped on the way). The Swedes are building a wall that will be able to block Russia's access to any manoeuvre in the sea, from Kaliningrad to St Petersburg.
And most importantly. For the Swedes, it is not a war for control of the Baltic Sea, but a struggle for the opportunity to remain themselves. The fact that Sweden has chosen not to hide in the legends of neutrality, but to stand up to those who bring darkness, is at least encouraging
