Chronicles of the debility of the new US presidential administration or how to shoot yourself in the foot with a grenade launcher and pretend nothing happened
Preamble. Defence One is an authoritative American media outlet specialising in defence, national security and military technology. It is read in the Pentagon, the State Department, NATO and think tanks. The publication publishes insights, expert assessments and strategic reviews that often form the basis for political decisions.
Now to the point. The aforementioned publication has published a rather disturbing article. I quote in full:
"Shutting down government agencies leaves U.S. virtually defenceless against foreign-influenced warfare, officials say
This is how we lose big wars," one former researcher said of the wider effort to eliminate or disband organisations that monitor and counter disinformation.
On Wednesday, the Trump administration closed a small office at the State Department that monitored foreign disinformation threats, the latest in a series of moves by the White House since January to dismantle organisations that monitor or respond to foreign influence and information campaigns. Experts say that if these efforts continue, the United States and audiences around the world could be left virtually defenceless against growing efforts by China and Russia to turn the world's population against the United States.
But that's not how the administration sees it. "Over the past decade, Americans have been slandered, fired, charged, and even imprisoned for simply speaking their minds. That ends today," said Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday, announcing the closure of the Centre for Countering Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference, known as R/Fimi.
R/Fimi was a remnant of the Centre for Global Engagement, which was created in 2016 by the Obama administration to counter Russian disinformation. Rubio claimed that the GEC "actively silenced and censored the voices of the Americans they were supposed to serve," a claim that officials at the Center for Global Engagement deny and for which there is no evidence.
The closure is just the latest step in a scheme that has been building for months. In February, Attorney General Pam Bondi ordered the disbanding of the FBI's Foreign Influence Task Force, a unit that investigated foreign disinformation and influence campaigns (including election interference), arguing that the closure would "free up resources to address more pressing priorities and end the risks of further weaponisation and abuse of prosecutorial discretion". Trump himself has often pushed the same narrative, that disinformation monitors unfairly target conservative voices in the United States. But former officials have likened the move to taking a "cop off the beaten track".
The same month, the White House scaled back the Department of Homeland Security's efforts to monitor foreign disinformation and protect election infrastructure by placing CISA officials responsible for disinformation tracking and election security on administrative leave, despite widespread and well-documented attempts at foreign interference in the 2024 elections.
CISA will survive. But the closure of the GEC (and subsequently R/Fimi) could mean the permanent loss of the US ability to counter hostile foreign influence campaigns targeting US interests around the world, including the US military.
According to two sources who were involved in the creation of the Centre, both sides - and the Obama administration that created it - deserve a share of the blame for the closure of the CGC.
President Barack Obama created the Global Engagement Centre by executive order in March 2016, at a time when the US government was trying to counter ISIS's active use of social media to recruit and gain support online.
The following year, Congress voted to formally establish it as a permanent division of the State Department. The following year, in response to Russia's campaign to influence the 2016 elections, Congress expanded the Centre's mandate to include "countering foreign state and non-state propaganda and disinformation".
A congressional staffer who was involved in the legislative effort to formalise the GEC, as well as a former senior DoD official who also played a role in its creation, told Defense One that the decision to create it within the State Department was a fatal mistake that hurt the centre's effectiveness.
If it had been created as part of the National Security Council at the White House level, they said, it could have coordinated actions and resources to counter foreign influence at all levels of government. But in the State Department, at the relatively low level of assistant secretary of state, the Centre was an unloved stepchild with no authority over any of the bureaus. So if the GEC wanted to support a campaign in a particular country, it had to get permission from one of the headquarters, which had their own agendas and interests.
"Obviously, at the end of the Obama administration, this was obstructed, and then the Trump administration obviously had no interest in empowering such an organisation," the congressional staffer said. The Biden administration has done little to expand it, they said, focusing it mainly on things like research.
Consequently, the GEC has been far less effective than it could have been, due to a lack of authority to carry out its mission, a lack of budget, and a poor structure, according to those who helped create it.Yet Trump allies such as Elon Musk have described the GEC as an extremely powerful organisation, a "worst offender", an American censor
There is no evidence to support the claim that the organisation exerts pressure on social media to remove or suppress conservative speech. But the idea may have come about after GEC gave grants to disinformation monitoring groups such as Graphika, which writes reports on foreign actors promoting false stories on social media, an official said.
The level of outrage at the disinformation watchdog is indicative of a fundamental shift in American politics. Historically, both parties have recognised the importance of exposing foreign attempts to influence the American public through disinformation. Consider the 2019 report of the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee on Russian information tactics during the 2016 election, published under the leadership of then-Chairman Rubio.
Russia has conducted disinformation campaigns against both the left and right-wing political forces in the United States. But concern about these efforts is no longer equally shared across the parties. Russian influence campaigns, including discredited conspiracies about bioweapons labs in Ukraine, false corruption allegations against members of the Biden family, downplaying Russian involvement in the 2016 election, and discrediting the legitimate results of the 2020 election, have found a new home on the right.
In December, the US Department of Justice revealed that Russia had paid several influential right-wing figures to repeat many false claims - and members of the Trump administration, including President Trump himself, repeated them as well. This has blurred the line between foreign information warfare and legitimate political speech, which is, of course, exactly what such campaigns are aimed at.
"We've allowed this transition to occur, where now identifying disinformation is censorship," said a congressional staffer.
What are the consequences of this transition? A poll conducted this week by the investigative journalism group NewsGuard and the polling company YouGov found that nearly a third of Americans believe at least one false claim directly attributed to Russian state media.
The Trump administration has also taken other steps that will allow Russian, Chinese and other information campaigns to gain market share and wider influence around the world, which could complicate US military operations in places like Africa and South America.
In February, President Trump ordered the closure of USAID after a funding freeze. Under the leadership of Musk and the White House's task force on efficiency, DOGE, employees were massively fired or reassigned, and USAID functions were dismantled.
The administration justified the curtailment of programmes by rampant waste and corruption.
The group Reporters Without Borders, citing an internal USAID memo, found that in 2023, the agency helped pay for the training of 6,200 journalists, funded 707 independent media outlets, and supported 279 civil society organisations aimed at strengthening independent journalism. And government officials who spoke to Defence One in February said that the beneficiaries of the US withdrawal from funding independent media and journalism will be Russian and Chinese efforts around the world to gain a foothold in local politics around the world.
The growing influence of China and Russia could also negatively impact US military operations, as was the case in Niger in 2023, when a Russian campaign helped install a new anti-democratic government that drove the US out of a key base, as AFRICOM Commander General Michael Langley testified in March 2024.
Then, last month, Trump took aim at US-funded international broadcasters, including Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, and Radio Free Asia, by signing an executive order to "downsize" the US Global Media Agency, the independent agency that oversees these media outlets.
The president of RFE/RL condemned the closure as "a huge gift to America's enemies", noting that authoritarian regimes in Moscow, Beijing and Tehran will "celebrate the death" of these media outlets that have challenged their state propaganda for decades.Indeed, Chinese and Russian state media openly welcomed the news. The Chinese state-run Global Times exclaimed that Voice of America had been "thrown out by its own government like a dirty rag". And the editor of RT exclaimed: "America has done [to VOA] what we could not do ourselves."
The White House has not only shut down groups and departments that track disinformation. It has also shut down the Department of Defence units that collect and analyse information about populations around the world, a critical component of influence campaigns.
Shortly after Pete Hegseth became Secretary of Defence, the Pentagon decided to eliminate its social science research programmes. The main one was the Minerva research initiative, which was tasked with helping military leaders understand "the social, cultural, behavioural, and political forces that shape regions of the world of strategic importance to the United States." In other words, what makes people in the world more (or less) prone to conflict or amenable to US diplomatic efforts.
In late February, the Pentagon notified academic grant recipients that projects funded by the Minerva programme were being cut short midway through, and that the planned new cycle of Minerva grants had been cancelled altogether. The official announcement was made on 10 March, when the Pentagon confirmed that it was cancelling 91 social science research projects, including the entire Minerva Initiative, as part of cost-saving measures. Heggatt explained the reason in his post on X: "The Ministry of Defence is not in the business of climate change nonsense. We are in the business of training and warfare."
But a researcher who has worked with Minevera told Defence One that one of the consequences of shutting down the initiative will be a less informed US national security apparatus. It would also have a direct impact on future US efforts to convince the public to trust the US military or the United States in general, and would mean a further erosion of US diplomatic efforts around the world, the researcher said.
"There are many ways to counter effective Russian and Chinese operations, but you need social science to figure out what really persuades people in this world."
Without such an understanding of the underlying drivers of populations around the world, the United States is likely to find itself once again in protracted, less-winnable conflicts due to false assumptions about willingness to fight or not to fight for American interests, the researcher said.
"That's why we lose big wars," they say.
Remark. Once again, we return to semantics, or rather to semantic warfare, the purpose of which is not to fight for territory, but for the meaning of words, meanings and perceptions of reality. It aims to change the way people think, distort the truth and impose favourable narratives through language, symbols and contexts.
The signal is really disturbing, because only at first glance, the closure of GEC, R/Fimi, USAID and Voice of America looks like a victory against "internal censorship". In reality, it is the same as throwing a surgeon out of the operating theatre during a surgery without having a replacement.
Now to the paradoxes. The United States is abandoning information defence amid the most intense information warfare since the Cold War (!!!). Over the past 15 months, Russia has carried out at least 11 sabotage attacks against submarine cables in the Baltic Sea (EU Cyber Direct data). China's United Front has established more than 1,500 new pseudo-community organisations in South America. And in Niger, as General Langley acknowledged, the United States lost a base to a Telegram campaign run by Russian private media curators from St. Petersburg.
In response, Washington is taking a "cop off duty" because someone "might not have liked him".
R/Fimi or GEC were not perfect organisations, this is not really about them. However, by shutting them down, the US is like a watchman who turned off the alarm because it was "beeping too much".
Russia and China are not looking for "censorship". They are looking for emptiness - a place to put their message, and they act bluntly according to Sun Tzu's book: "Occupy the space the enemy has left untouched." And that's it.
Another paradox. This has all happened before. In the 1930s, despite the growth of Nazi propaganda, the United States made virtually no investment in foreign information policy, which allowed the Third Reich to dominate the information space in Europe and Latin America. Within a few years, the following happened: as Goebbels' propaganda grew to the extent of a radio monopoly in Europe, the United States lost almost complete control over its image in France, Spain, and even Latin America. Now history is repeating itself. America's voice is being shut down not because of a lack of understanding of the consequences, but because of a simple unwillingness to understand the threat. Or is it an attack from within? Americans know best. In my personal opinion, yes. And I will now explain why
Russia and China have learnt to attack democracy with its own weapons. They spread the idea that the fight against lies is "censorship" and force society to destroy its own tools of defence. In this way, black becomes white, and lies enter the home under the guise of freedom.
Here's an unexpected fact:
In August 2023, Graphika published a report that revealed a network of fake accounts linked to a Chinese influence operation known as Spamouflage. These accounts posed as American citizens and disseminated content aimed at undermining trust in US political institutions.
In particular, they published memes and messages criticising US politicians of both parties, including Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, and spread disinformation about domestic issues such as gun control, homelessness and racial inequality.
Graphika and the Google Threat Analysis Group found that Chinese fake accounts pretended to be both liberal and conservative at the same time. They promoted content that mimicked American debates to exacerbate the divide, regardless of political camp.
Some of the fakes picked up messages similar to the rhetoric of Trump or his allies, for example: criticism of the GEC, Facebook, the "deep state", the US electoral system.
Now ask yourself who will be doing this now. So.
Personally, I don't understand the US giving up the ability to see, hear and understand these things at the state level, unless the ultimate goal is to convince Americans that the truth no longer exists. Because when people don't believe in the truth, it's only a matter of time before they start believing in any lie.
The irony is that Elon Musk, who screams about "censorship," is also running X, a platform where the Kremlin and Chinese botnets run daily tests on the cognitive stability of democracy. in fact, it's like a firefighter shouting something like: "We are not putting out the fire - we are giving the fire freedom of expression."
The GEC was eliminated under the slogan of "fighting against the oppression of freedom of speech", but from the outside it looks like an operation to legalise foreign propaganda under the guise of internal anger.
The paradox is that America, which won the Cold War thanks to the Voice of America, is now turning off the microphone to itself. Notice the choir from Beijing, Tehran and Moscow on the air.
Some will say it's an accident or a miscalculation. Or a coincidence.
However, the airwaves are never empty: if democracy is silent, dictatorship will speak. Freedom of speech does not work if the truth is no longer spoken. The truth does not come out automatically - it needs to be defended.
In fact, the United States took off its armour, thinking that it would not be hit. The decision is so-so, to be honest.

Chronicles of the debility of the new US presidential administration or how to shoot yourself in the foot with a grenade launcher and pretend nothing happened
Preamble. Defence One is an authoritative American media outlet specialising in defence, national security and military technology. It is read in the Pentagon, the State Department, NATO and think tanks. The publication publishes insights, expert assessments and strategic reviews that often form the basis for political decisions.
Now to the point. The aforementioned publication has published a rather disturbing article. I quote in full:
"Shutting down government agencies leaves U.S. virtually defenceless against foreign-influenced warfare, officials say
This is how we lose big wars," one former researcher said of the wider effort to eliminate or disband organisations that monitor and counter disinformation.
On Wednesday, the Trump administration closed a small office at the State Department that monitored foreign disinformation threats, the latest in a series of moves by the White House since January to dismantle organisations that monitor or respond to foreign influence and information campaigns. Experts say that if these efforts continue, the United States and audiences around the world could be left virtually defenceless against growing efforts by China and Russia to turn the world's population against the United States.
But that's not how the administration sees it. "Over the past decade, Americans have been slandered, fired, charged, and even imprisoned for simply speaking their minds. That ends today," said Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday, announcing the closure of the Centre for Countering Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference, known as R/Fimi.
R/Fimi was a remnant of the Centre for Global Engagement, which was created in 2016 by the Obama administration to counter Russian disinformation. Rubio claimed that the GEC "actively silenced and censored the voices of the Americans they were supposed to serve," a claim that officials at the Center for Global Engagement deny and for which there is no evidence.
The closure is just the latest step in a scheme that has been building for months. In February, Attorney General Pam Bondi ordered the disbanding of the FBI's Foreign Influence Task Force, a unit that investigated foreign disinformation and influence campaigns (including election interference), arguing that the closure would "free up resources to address more pressing priorities and end the risks of further weaponisation and abuse of prosecutorial discretion". Trump himself has often pushed the same narrative, that disinformation monitors unfairly target conservative voices in the United States. But former officials have likened the move to taking a "cop off the beaten track".
The same month, the White House scaled back the Department of Homeland Security's efforts to monitor foreign disinformation and protect election infrastructure by placing CISA officials responsible for disinformation tracking and election security on administrative leave, despite widespread and well-documented attempts at foreign interference in the 2024 elections.
CISA will survive. But the closure of the GEC (and subsequently R/Fimi) could mean the permanent loss of the US ability to counter hostile foreign influence campaigns targeting US interests around the world, including the US military.
According to two sources who were involved in the creation of the Centre, both sides - and the Obama administration that created it - deserve a share of the blame for the closure of the CGC.
President Barack Obama created the Global Engagement Centre by executive order in March 2016, at a time when the US government was trying to counter ISIS's active use of social media to recruit and gain support online.
The following year, Congress voted to formally establish it as a permanent division of the State Department. The following year, in response to Russia's campaign to influence the 2016 elections, Congress expanded the Centre's mandate to include "countering foreign state and non-state propaganda and disinformation".
A congressional staffer who was involved in the legislative effort to formalise the GEC, as well as a former senior DoD official who also played a role in its creation, told Defense One that the decision to create it within the State Department was a fatal mistake that hurt the centre's effectiveness.
If it had been created as part of the National Security Council at the White House level, they said, it could have coordinated actions and resources to counter foreign influence at all levels of government. But in the State Department, at the relatively low level of assistant secretary of state, the Centre was an unloved stepchild with no authority over any of the bureaus. So if the GEC wanted to support a campaign in a particular country, it had to get permission from one of the headquarters, which had their own agendas and interests.
"Obviously, at the end of the Obama administration, this was obstructed, and then the Trump administration obviously had no interest in empowering such an organisation," the congressional staffer said. The Biden administration has done little to expand it, they said, focusing it mainly on things like research.
Consequently, the GEC has been far less effective than it could have been, due to a lack of authority to carry out its mission, a lack of budget, and a poor structure, according to those who helped create it.Yet Trump allies such as Elon Musk have described the GEC as an extremely powerful organisation, a "worst offender", an American censor
There is no evidence to support the claim that the organisation exerts pressure on social media to remove or suppress conservative speech. But the idea may have come about after GEC gave grants to disinformation monitoring groups such as Graphika, which writes reports on foreign actors promoting false stories on social media, an official said.
The level of outrage at the disinformation watchdog is indicative of a fundamental shift in American politics. Historically, both parties have recognised the importance of exposing foreign attempts to influence the American public through disinformation. Consider the 2019 report of the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee on Russian information tactics during the 2016 election, published under the leadership of then-Chairman Rubio.
Russia has conducted disinformation campaigns against both the left and right-wing political forces in the United States. But concern about these efforts is no longer equally shared across the parties. Russian influence campaigns, including discredited conspiracies about bioweapons labs in Ukraine, false corruption allegations against members of the Biden family, downplaying Russian involvement in the 2016 election, and discrediting the legitimate results of the 2020 election, have found a new home on the right.
In December, the US Department of Justice revealed that Russia had paid several influential right-wing figures to repeat many false claims - and members of the Trump administration, including President Trump himself, repeated them as well. This has blurred the line between foreign information warfare and legitimate political speech, which is, of course, exactly what such campaigns are aimed at.
"We've allowed this transition to occur, where now identifying disinformation is censorship," said a congressional staffer.
What are the consequences of this transition? A poll conducted this week by the investigative journalism group NewsGuard and the polling company YouGov found that nearly a third of Americans believe at least one false claim directly attributed to Russian state media.
The Trump administration has also taken other steps that will allow Russian, Chinese and other information campaigns to gain market share and wider influence around the world, which could complicate US military operations in places like Africa and South America.
In February, President Trump ordered the closure of USAID after a funding freeze. Under the leadership of Musk and the White House's task force on efficiency, DOGE, employees were massively fired or reassigned, and USAID functions were dismantled.
The administration justified the curtailment of programmes by rampant waste and corruption.
The group Reporters Without Borders, citing an internal USAID memo, found that in 2023, the agency helped pay for the training of 6,200 journalists, funded 707 independent media outlets, and supported 279 civil society organisations aimed at strengthening independent journalism. And government officials who spoke to Defence One in February said that the beneficiaries of the US withdrawal from funding independent media and journalism will be Russian and Chinese efforts around the world to gain a foothold in local politics around the world.
The growing influence of China and Russia could also negatively impact US military operations, as was the case in Niger in 2023, when a Russian campaign helped install a new anti-democratic government that drove the US out of a key base, as AFRICOM Commander General Michael Langley testified in March 2024.
Then, last month, Trump took aim at US-funded international broadcasters, including Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, and Radio Free Asia, by signing an executive order to "downsize" the US Global Media Agency, the independent agency that oversees these media outlets.
The president of RFE/RL condemned the closure as "a huge gift to America's enemies", noting that authoritarian regimes in Moscow, Beijing and Tehran will "celebrate the death" of these media outlets that have challenged their state propaganda for decades.Indeed, Chinese and Russian state media openly welcomed the news. The Chinese state-run Global Times exclaimed that Voice of America had been "thrown out by its own government like a dirty rag". And the editor of RT exclaimed: "America has done [to VOA] what we could not do ourselves."
The White House has not only shut down groups and departments that track disinformation. It has also shut down the Department of Defence units that collect and analyse information about populations around the world, a critical component of influence campaigns.
Shortly after Pete Hegseth became Secretary of Defence, the Pentagon decided to eliminate its social science research programmes. The main one was the Minerva research initiative, which was tasked with helping military leaders understand "the social, cultural, behavioural, and political forces that shape regions of the world of strategic importance to the United States." In other words, what makes people in the world more (or less) prone to conflict or amenable to US diplomatic efforts.
In late February, the Pentagon notified academic grant recipients that projects funded by the Minerva programme were being cut short midway through, and that the planned new cycle of Minerva grants had been cancelled altogether. The official announcement was made on 10 March, when the Pentagon confirmed that it was cancelling 91 social science research projects, including the entire Minerva Initiative, as part of cost-saving measures. Heggatt explained the reason in his post on X: "The Ministry of Defence is not in the business of climate change nonsense. We are in the business of training and warfare."
But a researcher who has worked with Minevera told Defence One that one of the consequences of shutting down the initiative will be a less informed US national security apparatus. It would also have a direct impact on future US efforts to convince the public to trust the US military or the United States in general, and would mean a further erosion of US diplomatic efforts around the world, the researcher said.
"There are many ways to counter effective Russian and Chinese operations, but you need social science to figure out what really persuades people in this world."
Without such an understanding of the underlying drivers of populations around the world, the United States is likely to find itself once again in protracted, less-winnable conflicts due to false assumptions about willingness to fight or not to fight for American interests, the researcher said.
"That's why we lose big wars," they say.
Remark. Once again, we return to semantics, or rather to semantic warfare, the purpose of which is not to fight for territory, but for the meaning of words, meanings and perceptions of reality. It aims to change the way people think, distort the truth and impose favourable narratives through language, symbols and contexts.
The signal is really disturbing, because only at first glance, the closure of GEC, R/Fimi, USAID and Voice of America looks like a victory against "internal censorship". In reality, it is the same as throwing a surgeon out of the operating theatre during a surgery without having a replacement.
Now to the paradoxes. The United States is abandoning information defence amid the most intense information warfare since the Cold War (!!!). Over the past 15 months, Russia has carried out at least 11 sabotage attacks against submarine cables in the Baltic Sea (EU Cyber Direct data). China's United Front has established more than 1,500 new pseudo-community organisations in South America. And in Niger, as General Langley acknowledged, the United States lost a base to a Telegram campaign run by Russian private media curators from St. Petersburg.
In response, Washington is taking a "cop off duty" because someone "might not have liked him".
R/Fimi or GEC were not perfect organisations, this is not really about them. However, by shutting them down, the US is like a watchman who turned off the alarm because it was "beeping too much".
Russia and China are not looking for "censorship". They are looking for emptiness - a place to put their message, and they act bluntly according to Sun Tzu's book: "Occupy the space the enemy has left untouched." And that's it.
Another paradox. This has all happened before. In the 1930s, despite the growth of Nazi propaganda, the United States made virtually no investment in foreign information policy, which allowed the Third Reich to dominate the information space in Europe and Latin America. Within a few years, the following happened: as Goebbels' propaganda grew to the extent of a radio monopoly in Europe, the United States lost almost complete control over its image in France, Spain, and even Latin America. In 1939, these countries no longer saw America as the "standard of freedom", which ultimately proved to be very costly during the war effort. (Source: Nicholas Cull, "Selling America to the World").
Now history is repeating itself. America's voice is being shut down not because of a lack of understanding of the consequences, but because of a simple unwillingness to understand the threat. Or is it an attack from within? Americans know best. In my personal opinion, yes. And I will now explain why
Russia and China have learnt to attack democracy with its own weapons. They spread the idea that the fight against lies is "censorship" and force society to destroy its own tools of defence. In this way, black becomes white, and lies enter the home under the guise of freedom.
Here's an unexpected fact:
In August 2023, Graphika published a report that revealed a network of fake accounts linked to a Chinese influence operation known as Spamouflage. These accounts posed as American citizens and disseminated content aimed at undermining trust in US political institutions.
In particular, they published memes and messages criticising US politicians of both parties, including Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, and spread disinformation about domestic issues such as gun control, homelessness and racial inequality.
Graphika and the Google Threat Analysis Group found that Chinese fake accounts pretended to be both liberal and conservative at the same time. They promoted content that mimicked American debates to exacerbate the divide, regardless of political camp.
Some of the fakes picked up messages similar to the rhetoric of Trump or his allies, for example: criticism of the GEC, Facebook, the "deep state", the US electoral system.
Now ask yourself who will be doing this now. So.
Personally, I don't understand the US giving up the ability to see, hear and understand these things at the state level, unless the ultimate goal is to convince Americans that the truth no longer exists. Because when people don't believe in the truth, it's only a matter of time before they start believing in any lie.
The irony is that Elon Musk, who screams about "censorship," is also running X, a platform where the Kremlin and Chinese botnets run daily tests on the cognitive stability of democracy. in fact, it's like a firefighter shouting something like: "We are not putting out the fire - we are giving the fire freedom of expression."
The GEC was eliminated under the slogan of "fighting against the oppression of freedom of speech", but from the outside it looks like an operation to legalise foreign propaganda under the guise of internal anger.
The paradox is that America, which won the Cold War thanks to the Voice of America, is now turning off the microphone to itself. Notice the choir from Beijing, Tehran and Moscow on the air.
Some will say it's an accident or a miscalculation. Or a coincidence.
However, the airwaves are never empty: if democracy is silent, dictatorship will speak. Freedom of speech does not work if the truth is no longer spoken. The truth does not come out automatically - it needs to be defended.
In fact, the United States took off its armour, thinking that it would not be hit. The decision is so-so, to be honest.
