Children's Ukrainian wall. Invisible. For now
Preamble. To my shame, I have not seen this article before. Although there are actually thousands of such stories, after reading it, I can't help but feel like pouring acid on the territory of the Russian Federation. And the rest... judge for yourself. I quote verbatim:
"A Ukrainian boy tracked down the Russian who killed his father
Yuriy Nechyporenko was 14 years old when a Russian soldier shot his father, who was standing next to him in Bucha. He managed to track down the killer and sent him a defiant message
Russian troops were patrolling the streets of his occupied hometown, but 14-year-old Yuriy Nechyporenko knew his sick mother would not last long without medication.
He and his father Ruslan ventured out on their bicycles to the aid centre set up by the city council in Bucha, northwest of Kyiv.
They were stopped by a Russian soldier. "We got off our bikes and raised our hands. He asked us where we were going," said Yurii, now 17, recalling that day in March 2022. They replied that they were going to get food, but two shots were fired in response.
"I saw my father fall. Then the third shot hit me in the arm, and I fell down too. I asked if I could go to my dad, and the soldier shot me in the arm again, then there were two more shots."
The Russian was aiming at Yurii's head while he was lying on the ground, but his hoodie saved him by distorting his face. The bullet passed through the fabric but did not hit his skull.
The last shot was fired. Yuriy did not move, feeling his father's blood soaking his clothes. The 47-year-old father of three was killed just over a metre away from his son.
As soon as the soldier left, Yuriy got up and ran. Two days later, he and his two brothers buried their father, a lawyer, in the family garden. The following month, the Russian offensive on Kyiv was repelled by Ukrainian troops. Bucha was liberated from occupation, and the world was outraged by the evidence of torture, executions, rape and looting committed by Russian troops in the suburbs of the capital.
Kyiv, with the support of its allies, promised to prosecute Russian war criminals. Yurii joined the effort and tracked down his father's killer.
Among the numerous videos and images from CCTV cameras at shops and petrol stations that showed Russians in Bucha, Yurii recognised the soldier. When the names of the military units that were sent to Bucha and who served in them became known, he found his name.
Yuriy's older brother found the soldier's contact details on the internet and they wrote him a simple message on Telegram last year. "I am alive. You missed," Yurii wrote.
The Russian replied: "I'll be back to finish the job."
Ruslan was among 458 civilians, including nine children, whose bodies were found in the city after the liberation. His case is being investigated as a war crime by the prosecutor's office, which has also referred the case of the Bucha massacre to the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
Yuriy belongs to a generation of deeply traumatised Ukrainian children, and his family is one of tens of thousands torn apart by the Russian invasion. An estimated 40,000 Ukrainian children have had their parents killed by Russian forces, and at least 1,800 children have been orphaned by the war. This number does not include children in the occupied territories.
Gen.Ukrainian, an organisation that rehabilitates children with severe injuries, raised funds to send Yuriy to a prestigious school in America.
Oksana Lebedeva, founder of Gen.Ukrainian, said: "We work with children who have lost their parents in an incredible way. We have children who have lost several generations of their family in one day - grandparents, mum and dad."
Last summer, during his school holidays in the United States, Yuriy returned to Ukraine to work as a counsellor at a summer camp for children who had also lost their parents. Eight-year-old Vladyk refused to talk after his mother was murdered in front of him, but eventually he opened up to Yuriy.
"The principle of peer rehabilitation is incredibly effective, and Yuriy has helped us with so many children," Lebedeva said.
Andriy, another orphan supported by the organisation, was ten years old when a Russian tank opened fire on the car he was travelling in with his parents and uncle.
"They hit the petrol tank. My mother was next to me, my father was in front," he says. "Everything was a blur. When I came to, I couldn't recognise my uncle at first, he had such terrible wounds on his head. I tried to get out - a Russian soldier came up to me, pulled me out through the window and left me on the road. I watched them burn. I felt so helpless."
According to him, the counselling took weeks, but Gen.Ukrainian helped Andriy find the meaning of life and a vision for the future. A talented footballer, he dreams of playing for Real Madrid one day. "For me, the main thing now is to fulfil my dream, my future, so that my parents can look at me, be proud and say: "This is our son, this is 100 per cent our son."
Gen.Ukrainian strives to stabilise the emotions of the children it helps. Lebedieva has collected some of the illustrations they draw as part of the therapy. The images show the horror that the war has inflicted on their perception of reality. In one drawing by a 13-year-old girl, a monster looms over apartment blocks as if ready to destroy them. Another, a self-portrait of an 11-year-old boy, depicts a child divided in two: one side is bright and smiling, the other dark and depressed.
Even Yuri, an exemplary student, is not free from his demons. He has entered West Point, an American military academy where he wants to learn how to fight the Russians.
Until this year, many of these groups were funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), but its closure by Elon Musk's Department of Performance means that $16 billion in humanitarian aid to Ukraine has disappeared overnight. Dozens of NGOs are scrambling to find funds to help orphans rebuild their lives.

Kyiv, with the support of its allies, promised to prosecute Russian war criminals. Yurii joined the effort and tracked down his father's killer.
Among the numerous videos and images from CCTV cameras at shops and petrol stations that showed Russians in Bucha, Yurii recognised the soldier. When the names of the military units that were sent to Bucha and who served in them became known, he found his name.
Yuriy's older brother found the soldier's contact details on the internet and they wrote him a simple message on Telegram last year. "I am alive. You missed," Yurii wrote.
The Russian replied: "I'll be back to finish the job."
Ruslan was among 458 civilians, including nine children, whose bodies were found in the city after the liberation. His case is being investigated as a war crime by the prosecutor's office, which has also referred the case of the Bucha massacre to the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
Yuriy belongs to a generation of deeply traumatised Ukrainian children, and his family is one of tens of thousands torn apart by the Russian invasion. An estimated 40,000 Ukrainian children have had their parents killed by Russian forces, and at least 1,800 children have been orphaned by the war. This number does not include children in the occupied territories.
Gen.Ukrainian, an organisation that rehabilitates children with severe injuries, raised funds to send Yuriy to a prestigious school in America.
Oksana Lebedeva, founder of Gen.Ukrainian, said: "We work with children who have lost their parents in an incredible way. We have children who have lost several generations of their family in one day - grandparents, mum and dad."
Last summer, during his school holidays in the United States, Yuriy returned to Ukraine to work as a counsellor at a summer camp for children who had also lost their parents. Eight-year-old Vladyk refused to talk after his mother was murdered in front of him, but eventually he opened up to Yuriy.
"The principle of peer rehabilitation is incredibly effective, and Yuriy has helped us with so many children," Lebedeva said.
Andriy, another orphan supported by the organisation, was ten years old when a Russian tank opened fire on the car he was travelling in with his parents and uncle.
"They hit the petrol tank. My mother was next to me, my father was in front," he says. "Everything was a blur. When I came to, I couldn't recognise my uncle at first, he had such terrible wounds on his head. I tried to get out - a Russian soldier came up to me, pulled me out through the window and left me on the road. I watched them burn. I felt so helpless."
According to him, the counselling took weeks, but Gen.Ukrainian helped Andriy find the meaning of life and a vision for the future. A talented footballer, he dreams of playing for Real Madrid one day. "For me, the main thing now is to fulfil my dream, my future, so that my parents can look at me, be proud and say: "This is our son, this is 100 per cent our son."
Gen.Ukrainian strives to stabilise the emotions of the children it helps. Lebedieva has collected some of the illustrations they draw as part of the therapy. The images show the horror that the war has inflicted on their perception of reality. In one drawing by a 13-year-old girl, a monster looms over apartment blocks as if ready to destroy them. Another, a self-portrait of an 11-year-old boy, depicts a child divided in two: one side is bright and smiling, the other dark and depressed.
Even Yuri, an exemplary student, is not free from his demons. He has entered West Point, an American military academy where he wants to learn how to fight the Russians.
Until this year, many of these groups were funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), but its closure by Elon Musk's Department of Performance means that $16 billion in humanitarian aid to Ukraine has disappeared overnight. Dozens of NGOs are scrambling to find funds to help orphans rebuild their lives.
Anna Bondarenko, head of the Ukrainian Volunteer Service, another charity, said: "In January, we were confirming a new grant agreement with the Ukrainian Confidence Building Initiative: "In January, we were in the process of confirming a new grant agreement with the Ukraine Confidence Building Initiative, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Based on our previous projects of this kind, approximately 2,000 children did not receive the support they could have received."
Other organisations say this is just the tip of the iceberg, and millions more children are likely to be affected, said Kateryna Zosina of the charity Children of Heroes: "Last week, we received three rejection letters from USAID-funded organisations, including one for $50,000 for psychological support for our children, as well as hygiene kits and food packages for the children."
They died of shrapnel wounds after shielding her with their bodies from the blast wave. "Children of Heroes found her a place at a private boarding school, where several other orphaned girls study.
"There are not many children like me there," says Anya. "We started to communicate well after a week. We have these heartwarming evenings when we get together as a group after all the other girls in the room are asleep, and we discuss some stories about our parents and support each other."
Today, Anya dreams of becoming a psychologist, and remembers her parents with a smile. "I have a memory that I have kept in my mind for a very long time. I was 11 years old, I was at home, it was my birthday. Mum, dad, me, my brother and his wife, all together, happy. They gave me presents - no matter what, despite the war, they wanted to give me a wonderful birthday," she said, beaming, and then suddenly became serious.
"I understand that I can't bring them back and that I have to move on with my life. But from time to time, periodically, in a month, in three months, I remember them. And I miss them."
Comment. We have a lot to work on with young people - there are many unresolved issues that require action, not just nice words. But in the long run, we have a good chance of building a crocodile ditch between Russia and Ukraine for hundreds of years

It is important to understand that if we don't fuck up their upbringing, today's so-called radicals among adults will be fluffy cats compared to them
It's not about hatred now, no. It's about remembering and understanding the reasons why the events happened and those who are directly responsible for certain events. Children know, they should know, where good and evil are, who brings evil into their homes, who justifies evil, who is not on the same path as anyone else, because they are potential evil that has not yet shown their true colours
Children should not hate, it is a very strong feeling that can burn a person from the inside out. But they must have an awareness of who the enemy is for the rest of their lives, and they must tell their own children about them, about those who bring destruction, so that they do not have vain illusions or hopes
Whether Russia exists or not, it doesn't matter. It is important that children are disgusted, disgusted, or just want to fuck with phrases about adinnarot or bullshit about "brothers" from Russia.
The trick is not hatred, but the realisation of the price children have paid in the past - no one asked them whether they were ready or not to "pay the bill" from the katsaps. For most of them, everything happened instantly: one step! And you are an orphan.
One! And you were left without a home. One! And everything you love is destroyed, even though you don't know shit about geopolitics and everything else. One arrival, one shot, and all your dreams are fucked.
These kids have already poured the foundation. Some started building it in 2014, some in 2022, and some joined in 2025
