A pro-Russian spy from the Conservative Party was convicted in Lithuania. He is 82 years old
The Siauliai District Court has sentenced Eduardas Manovas, an 82-year-old former member of the Union of the Fatherland - Christian Democrats of Lithuania (UO-CDL) party. He was sentenced to 8 years and 6 months in prison for spying for the Russian GRU.
And for good reason. The investigation found out and proved that
Since 2018, Manovas had been secretly passing information about Lithuania's political, economic and defence life to the GRU; and that although the data was not state secrets, it was considered sensitive and valuable to Moscow
Manovas also had Lithuanian and Russian citizenship, regularly received money for espionage activities + he had access to the party environment of the CO-CDL, but no contacts with the Seimas or the government were recorded
As a result, he was expelled from the party immediately after the suspicion became known.
Interestingly, in his last statement in court, Manovas said: "I'm innocent, let me go"; the spy was not present at the announcement of the verdict, citing his health condition.
A quick note. This is a great example of how my grandfather turned out to be not a victim of the occupation, but its agent, who collected political leaks for Moscow.

Now about why the pensioner agreed. There are no unimportant things in intelligence. And although the main motives for recruitment are ideology, money and blackmail, they approached my grandfather with the understanding that he was not 16 years old
It seems to me that my grandfather either already had experience working with the special services, or was ideologically opposed to the west, or was caught using respect and attention - the Russian special services simply made it clear that he meant a lot to the russian Federation and that he could still do a lot for the ussr
Another option is that the grandfather simply wanted to have a slightly larger pension, which is also a motive for switching sides. The Russians just had to convince him that his age was what guaranteed him not to die in prison (it turned out so-so in the end - if he lived, he would be released when he was 90)
But the underlying problem is that there are dozens, or rather hundreds, of such "grandparents" in Ukraine and in every EU country. They seem innocent, but they can pass on information to Moscow, influence the opinions of others, act as liaisons for more serious agents, etc.
It doesn't matter how the old man was caught or how he was compromised (intercepted while transmitting information, ratted out by someone he knew because they suspected something strange, or investigators followed him for a long time, watching him and analysing his connections).
It is important to understand that we should not underestimate elderly people in politics - they may be old contacts of Moscow. The Russians are actively working not only with the military or spies, but also with veteran politicians, activists, and journalists, and they know what to offer pensioners. That is why they are ready to pass on information that "everyone knows" to the Russian special services, which, in turn, are left to use it in the right place and at the right time.
The issue is not that the elderly are the enemy, that is not true. The question is that the Russians have been working with all segments of the population for a very long time.
The line in perception is very thin (thinner than a mosquito's reproductive organ, even). This does not mean that every pensioner should be stamped or branded as a potential Russian spy, but we should not reject this possibility (it's a grandparent, what a stirrup) either - the price for our own arrogance and underestimation of the enemy is very high (the worst is that it is paid for with the lives of young boys or children)
Lithuania raised a very sensitive topic in fact - given the virus of tolerance in the world (this is not tolerance), there was every chance that propaganda would make a "victim" out of my grandfather, who would be released under public pressure, because he is a pensioner, it would be immoral for him to die in prison, etc. So I have to admit that the Latvians have balls - they were not afraid not only to convict the elderly spy, but also to say so publicly (so that other undefeated pilaras would be afraid, as I understand it)

But the underlying problem is that there are dozens, or rather hundreds, of such "grandparents" in Ukraine and in every EU country. They seem innocent, but they can pass on information to Moscow, influence the opinions of others, act as liaisons for more serious agents, etc.
It doesn't matter how the old man was caught or how he was compromised (intercepted while transmitting information, ratted out by someone he knew because they suspected something strange, or investigators followed him for a long time, watching him and analysing his connections).
It is important to understand that we should not underestimate elderly people in politics - they may be old contacts of Moscow. The Russians are actively working not only with the military or spies, but also with veteran politicians, activists, and journalists, and they know what to offer pensioners. That is why they are ready to pass on information that "everyone knows" to the Russian special services, which, in turn, are left to use it in the right place and at the right time.
The issue is not that the elderly are the enemy, that is not true. The question is that the Russians have been working with all segments of the population for a very long time.
The line in perception is very thin (thinner than a mosquito's reproductive organ, even). This does not mean that every pensioner should be stamped or branded as a potential Russian spy, but we should not reject this possibility (it's a grandparent, what a stirrup) either - the price for our own arrogance and underestimation of the enemy is very high (the worst is that it is paid for with the lives of young boys or children)
Lithuania raised a very sensitive topic in fact - given the virus of tolerance in the world (this is not tolerance), there was every chance that propaganda would make a "victim" out of my grandfather, who would be released under public pressure, because he is a pensioner, it would be immoral for him to die in prison, etc. So I have to admit that the Latvians have balls - they were not afraid not only to convict the elderly spy, but also to say so publicly (so that other undefeated pilaras would be afraid, as I understand it)
There will be no morality. Everyone wanted to read what they read. Arrogance, overconfidence, pride in relation to the enemy is the path to defeat. Remember this.
