Why the North Korean army suffered catastrophic losses in Russia's war against Ukraine
The world perceives the North Korean soldier as disciplined, fanatically loyal to the regime and ready to sacrifice. For some reason, the image of a fighter who does not retreat arises in the minds of most people.
However, the realities of the 21st century brutally destroy such ideas - in the Russian Kursk region, where fighting has been going on for more than a year, the North Korean contingent, an ally of Putin's Russia, is suffering defeats and losing thousands of lives.
According to British intelligence estimates, as of March 2025, losses among North Korean troops participating in military operations in the Kursk region exceeded 5,000 people, of whom approximately one-third were killed in action. These statistics demonstrate the destruction of the myth about the North Korean military and the large-scale failure of the exported cannon fodder (military resource)
North Korea sent more than 11,000 servicemen from the elite brigades of the Chosun Inmin'Gun, its people's army, to help the Russians. Subsequently, another 3,000 people were sent to the front as reinforcements. As of the end of March, a third of this contingent had already been killed or wounded.
Why did this happen? British analysts say that it happened because, despite their combat endurance, the North Koreans are completely unsuited to the new reality of war. They came to the battlefield with the idea of a classical style of warfare, where massive infantry attacks, artillery duels, and tank breakthroughs take place. The reality of the Ukrainian-Russian war is about drones, high-precision Western weapons, cyber warfare and real-time intelligence.
North Korean units attacked defence lines on foot, sometimes without basic air or artillery cover. According to British intelligence, most of the losses suffered by these units were during massive assaults, where the tactic of "overwhelming numbers" did not just fail, it was fatal. Hundreds of soldiers became easy targets for FPV drones, artillery systems and anti-tank weapons used by the Ukrainians.
By the way, the appearance of North Korean troops in Russia is not a humanitarian mission or a manifestation of "anti-imperialism". This is a diplomatic gesture of loyalty - Kim Jong-un is thus thanking Putin for his support, weapons, technology and trade in circumventing sanctions. Putin, in turn, needs any allies willing to supply not only ammunition (which the North Koreans have already been supplying in large quantities), but also cannon fodder.
However, according to Pentagon sources, the military benefit of the presence of 50,000 Russian troops and the North Korean "shock corps" near Kursk was not decisive. Although the Ukrainians retreated from Russian territory after the breakthrough in the summer of 2024, North Korean troops had nothing to do with it. In fact, the combat missions of Kim's "internationalists" Kim's "internationalists" were not fulfilled - they won neither honour nor glory in Russia. Only the myth about them collapsed, and the whole world saw that in today's war, fanatics from North Korea are only temporarily living targets. And that's it.

And the paradox is that this debut turned into a live reputational disaster - the army, which the Kim regime has been touting as "invincible" for years, was unable to withstand drones, Starlink, Western artillery and Ukrainian tactics.
In addition, South Korea and the United States had a unique opportunity to observe the DPRK army's combat capability in combat conditions, not in propaganda videos. I think it doesn't take a genius to understand that the results of these observations are not in Pyongyang's favour.

This is a diplomatic gesture of loyalty - Kim Jong-un is thus thanking Putin for his support, weapons, technology and trade in circumventing sanctions. Putin, in turn, needs any allies willing to supply not only ammunition (which the North Koreans have already been supplying in large quantities), but also cannon fodder.
However, according to Pentagon sources, the military benefit of the presence of 50,000 Russian troops and the North Korean "shock corps" near Kursk was not decisive. Although the Ukrainians retreated from Russian territory after the breakthrough in the summer of 2024, North Korean troops had nothing to do with it. In fact, the combat missions of Kim's "internationalists" Kim's "internationalists" were not fulfilled - they won neither honour nor glory in Russia. Only the myth about them collapsed, and the whole world saw that in today's war, fanatics from North Korea are only temporarily living targets. And that's it.
Operations involving North Korean troops are formally limited to Russian territory. This is not a coincidence, but a precaution: according to British intelligence, the withdrawal of DPRK forces beyond the Kursk region - i.e. into Ukraine - would require the direct and public approval of both dictators, which would mean an escalation for which they would have to be held accountable.
While Russia is trying to hold on to the gains it has made, the North Koreans want to save face - the West is watching closely and drawing the right conclusions. And although NATO countries have not declared the DPRK a party to the conflict, the very fact that foreign regular troops are fighting on the side of Russia under international law is alarming.
In general, this is the first time since the Korean War that DPRK soldiers have fought outside their region. And the paradox is that this debut turned into a live reputational disaster - the army, which the Kim regime has been touting as "invincible" for years, was unable to withstand drones, Starlink, Western artillery and Ukrainian tactics.
In addition, South Korea and the United States had a unique opportunity to observe the DPRK army's combat capability in combat conditions, not in propaganda videos. I think it doesn't take a genius to understand that the results of these observations are not in Pyongyang's favour.
Epilogue. Russia's "anti-Western front" is gradually losing any effectiveness. The story of the North Korean contingent in the Kursk region is yet another confirmation that fanaticism cannot compensate for the backwardness of technology and outdated tactics in modern warfare
As a result, while the West is discussing new aid packages for Ukraine, Kim Jong-un is collecting the bodies of his fallen soldiers all over the Kursk region, trying not to lose the support of his only partner from Russia, and the partner himself is increasingly looking like a dictator whose army needs external mercenaries to hold the front line.The world has seen that in modern warfare, discipline is only part of success. Without technology, logistics and adaptation to new conditions, even the most fearsome fanatic fighter turns into a temporary human target.
