Francesco Totti, the legendary Italian footballer and former captain of Roma, is planning to visit Moscow on 8 April 2025 to take part in the RB Prize award ceremony organised by the Bookmakers' Rating portal.
This visit has caused a wave of criticism and concern. Let me explain why.
"Bookmakers' Rating is involved in investigations related to the circumvention of Western sanctions and money laundering by criminal organisations. In particular, British law enforcement agencies are investigating the use of this platform to purchase cryptocurrencies to legalise illegal income. In addition, the site was temporarily blocked in Russia in 2018 for violating gambling regulations.
TheBookmakersRating is a Russian online platform specialising in reviews and ratings of bookmakers. It provides reviews and ratings of legal and illegal bookmakers, sports forecasts from experts, mirror sites for bypassing blocking and a money laundering platform (according to many investigations, used to circumvent sanctions and illegal financial transactions).
Interestingly, Francesco Totti himself (what a faggot he is as a footballer) has repeatedly been at the centre of betting scandals.
One of the most high-profile episodes erupted in 2023, when Italian media reported his possible involvement in illegal betting through offshore bookmakers. In 2023, the Italian financial police (Guardia di Finanza) launched an investigation into illegal online betting platforms, including Asian and Maltese bookmakers. According to leaks from investigative agencies, Totti could place bets on football and horse racing using anonymous accounts. Now about something that will not be written anywhere.
Totti, even if he is not directly involved in financial schemes, can unconsciously or consciously (for rubles, that is) help to circumvent sanctions because of his popularity and connections with dubious structures such as Bookmaker Rating.
It helps to legitimise dubious platforms - by participating in events organised by Bookmakers' Rating, it increases the credibility of this platform among the international audience. Given that the site has already been mentioned in investigations into illegal financial transactions (e.g., buying cryptocurrencies through anonymous profiles), the footballer's invitation looks like an investment
The website itself can be used to conduct transactions from Russian accounts under sanctions, and then converted into cryptocurrency and withdrawn abroad. Why? Because it has a Totti face on it. This means that in the eyes of the public, the platform looks respectable if it is supported by a legendary footballer.
Next. After the introduction of sanctions against Russia in 2022, many Russian bookmakers lost access to European payment systems. However, Bookmaker Rating uses mirror site schemes and alternative payment methods
Totti can also advertise cryptocurrency payments among its fans.
The site itself uses offshore accounts linked to platforms in Asia, Africa, and Malta, plus transit accounts (for example, through third countries such as the UAE or Serbia, where sanctions control is weaker).
If Totti receives payments for cooperation through offshore companies, this may indirectly contribute to the financing of sanctions circumvention schemes.
Further. Russian propaganda "media" are actively using Totti's visit to Moscow as a signal of "normalisation" of relations with the West. The aim of the campaign is to increase the interest of European users in platforms under sanctions. Watch your hands:
If Western users register on such sites, it increases the inflow of currency to the Russian platform.
Through exchange transactions, money from abroad can be transferred to Russian accounts, bypassing official banking routes.
This is the scheme, nothing complicated
The Italian authorities have previously investigated illegal betting schemes involving mafia structures such as the 'Ndrangheta. These groups have already helped Russian oligarchs to hide capital and launder money
Totti himself, by participating in such promotions, legitimises the work of such "washing machines", as part of the bets can be used to withdraw money from Russia through anonymous cryptocurrency wallets or to pay for sanctioned goods
In general, I do not exclude the possibility that Totti receives fees through schemes that allow him to circumvent sanctions (cryptocurrency exchanges working with Russia + payments through legal entities in countries with "grey" regulation + the use of shell companies in countries that have not joined the sanctions, such as Turkey, Kazakhstan, the UAE)
Epilogue. I absolutely agree that Totti may not be a key participant in the schemes
But his presence in Moscow and cooperation with platforms of dubious reputation makes him a tool in the system of circumventing sanctions. Or an accomplice
Given his past betting scandals, I can't believe that Totti is not aware of the risks involved. However, he prefers to turn a blind eye to them - rubles don't smell, right?
