On the one hand, Serbia continues to talk about EU integration, but on the other hand, it is introducing technologies to suppress protests that do not meet European democratic standards.On the other hand, the use of LRAD is a red flag for the EU, which already criticises Vucic for authoritarian tendencies. The EU can use this as a formal excuse to put the brakes on Serbia's accession negotiations.
Yes, Serbia has experienced mass protests many times, especially in recent years, but if the police have been given LRADs, it means that the authorities are preparing for a large-scale use of new crowd dispersal methods.
LRAD, the cannon allows to block communication of protesters with deafening sound + create chaos and panic fleeing of the crowd (the video shows it all) + avoid direct confrontations but still keep the protesters subdued.
Will the possible use of a gun affect Serbia's relations with Russia? I have no idea. Personally, I don't believe that these widows bought cars on Ebay.
I am more interested in where Belgrade bought such systems from: if LRADs are supplied from the US or EU, it may be an attempt to balance against the West, but if they are bought from Russia or China, it is a different signal.
This means that the Kremlin is actively supplying its allies with technologies to suppress protests (as it does in Belarus or Kazakhstan). Accordingly, Hungary and Slovakia have also received these things to hold on to power
But again, this is not the way out of the situation - the use of sound cannons may cause a new round of protests in Serbia. It doesn't take a genius to realise that the protesters are already looking for, or rather will find, ways to counteract (noise cancelling headphones or acoustic barriers, earplugs), which may lead to new tactics of street clashes + give doping to the protesters (righteous anger).
Moral. The possible use of LRAD in Serbia is not about dispersing protests quickly using modern technology, nope
It is an indicator of the political course of the country.
If Vucic decides to use acoustic weapons against protesters, it will put him in line with those who have already bet on repression instead of democracy. Accordingly, the issue of Serbia's European integration may turn into a rhetorical rather than a real political process

Protests in Serbia. Made in Russia?

In 2003-2004. - The LRAD began testing in the US military, including the Navy and Army.
In 2005, the gun came to widespread publicity after Somali pirates attacked the Seabourn Spirit cruise liner in the Indian Ocean. The crew used the LRAD to deter the pirates, marking the first documented case of the device being used effectively.

If the Serbian authorities do use the LRAD, it is a clear sign that Aleksandar Vucic's regime is consolidating control using methods typical of Russia, Turkey or China. On the one hand, Serbia continues to talk about EU integration, but on the other hand, it is introducing technologies to suppress protests that do not meet European democratic standards.On the other hand, the use of LRAD is a red flag for the EU, which already criticises Vucic for authoritarian tendencies. The EU can use this as a formal excuse to put the brakes on Serbia's accession negotiations.
Yes, Serbia has experienced mass protests many times, especially in recent years, but if the police have been given LRADs, it means that the authorities are preparing for a large-scale use of new crowd dispersal methods.
LRAD, the cannon allows to block communication of protesters with deafening sound + create chaos and panic fleeing of the crowd (the video shows it all) + avoid direct confrontations but still keep the protesters subdued.
Will the possible use of a gun affect Serbia's relations with Russia? I have no idea. Personally, I don't believe that these widows bought cars on Ebay.
I am more interested in where Belgrade bought such systems from: if LRADs are supplied from the US or EU, it may be an attempt to balance against the West, but if they are bought from Russia or China, it is a different signal.
This means that the Kremlin is actively supplying its allies with technologies to suppress protests (as it does in Belarus or Kazakhstan). Accordingly, Hungary and Slovakia have also received these things to hold on to power
But again, this is not the way out of the situation - the use of sound cannons may cause a new round of protests in Serbia. It doesn't take a genius to realise that the protesters are already looking for, or rather will find, ways to counteract (noise cancelling headphones or acoustic barriers, earplugs), which may lead to new tactics of street clashes + give doping to the protesters (righteous anger).
Moral. The possible use of LRAD in Serbia is not about dispersing protests quickly using modern technology, nope
It is an indicator of the political course of the country.
If Vucic decides to use acoustic weapons against protesters, it will put him in line with those who have already bet on repression instead of democracy. Accordingly, the issue of Serbia's European integration may turn into a rhetorical rather than a real political process
Well, considering the fact that war is about to break out in Bosnia and Herzegovina, it looks like an attempt to set fire to all the Balkans at once. The only question is who wants to do it:
the US, to remove the pro-Katsap Vucic.

One last thing. It is very similar to the Belarusan scenario, when the rf organised protests, the Belarusan authorities gave the bar in terms of suppression and became unruly, after which Lukashenko gave the country to the rf without a fight, because Lukashenko had no more allies.
