Мы нe пoнимaeм, кaк лидep cтpaны, кoтopaя являeтcя cимвoлoм cвoбoднoгo миpa, мoжeт нe видeть этoгo. An ultimatum from Valensa. Here we go
Lech Walesa and activists of the Solidarity trade union have written an open letter to Donald Trump
The authors of the letter called on the US to fulfil the security guarantees for Ukraine outlined in the Budapest Memorandum of 1994:
Mr President!
We watched with dismay and disgust the report about your conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. We find your demand for respect and gratitude for the material assistance provided by the United States to Ukraine in the fight against Russia offensive. Gratitude should be expressed to the heroic Ukrainian soldiers who shed their blood defending the values of the free world. They are the ones who have been dying on the front lines for more than 11 years in the name of those values and the independence of their homeland, which is under attack by Russia.
We do not understand how the leader of a country that is a symbol of the free world can not see this.
We were also horrified by the fact that the atmosphere in the Oval Office during this conversation was reminiscent of what we remember well from Security Service interrogations and trials in communist courts. Prosecutors and judges commissioned by the all-powerful Communist political police were also explaining to us that they were the ones holding all the cards and we were the ones holding none. They demanded that we cease our activities on the grounds that thousands of innocent people were suffering because of us. They deprived us of our freedom and civil rights because we refused to co-operate with the authorities and express gratitude to them. We are shocked that you treated President Vladimir Zelensky in a similar way.
The history of the 20th century shows that every time the United States sought to keep its distance from democratic values and its European allies, it ended up endangering itself. President Woodrow Wilson understood this when he made the decision for the United States to enter World War I in 1917. It was also understood by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who, after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, decided that the war in defence of America would be fought not only in the Pacific, but also in Europe, in alliance with the countries attacked by the Third Reich.
We remember that without President Ronald Reagan and American financial commitment, the collapse of the Soviet empire would not have been possible. President Reagan knew the suffering of millions of enslaved people in Soviet Russia and the countries it conquered, including thousands of political prisoners who paid for their sacrifice in defence of democratic values with freedom. Its greatness, among other things, is that it unequivocally labelled the USSR an "evil empire" and gave it a decisive response. We won, and today there is a statue of President Ronald Reagan in Warsaw, outside the U.S. Embassy.
Mr President, material aid - military and financial - cannot be the equivalent of the blood spilled for the independence and freedom of Ukraine, Europe and the entire free world. Human life is priceless, its value cannot be measured in money. Gratitude must be expressed to those who sacrifice blood and freedom. For us, the people of Solidarity, former political prisoners of the communist regime who served Soviet Russia, this is obvious.
We call on the United States to honour the guarantees it gave with Britain in the Budapest Memorandum of 1994, which clearly spelled out a commitment to protect the inviolability of Ukraine's borders in exchange for its surrender of nuclear weapons stockpiles. These guarantees are unconditional: there is no mention that such assistance would be treated as an economic exchange.

Many people may think, "Who cares about this letter? Trump won't read it." But this isn't about Trump.
It's about how his myth of a "strong leader" is being shattered.
It's not really a letter really.
Lech Walesa is not just the former president of Poland. He is a man who was personally involved in dismantling the Soviet empire and was among those who made it fall. This is a man who was really feared in the Kremlin.
And now he's saying to Trump:
"Your rhetoric is like that of a communist prosecutor, you're humiliating Zelensky like the KGB humiliated us, you're betraying the free world just like the dictators of the past did."
That's not just a rebuke - it's actually equating Trump with Soviet proxies. Wałęsa is hitting where it hurts Trump the most - his image as a "freedom fighter."
Trump is still a weakling from a historical perspective. In the 1980s, Reagan called the USSR an evil empire and crushed it economically.
In 2024, Trump tells Zelensky:
"You should be grateful for the help."
Wałęsa, on the other hand, equates Trump not with Reagan, but with those Reagan despised. He says, "You are not an American leader. You're a man who trembles before dictators like the communists trembled before Muscovy
For Trump, who is building himself up as a strong president, it's not permissive, but it's quite an image blow.
Epilogue or where's the peremoga. In my heart of hearts, I don't fuck around. A letter doesn't shoot down Russian missiles, a letter is not projectiles or air defence. The issue is that the letter makes Trump toxic and any attempt to negotiate with Putin will look like a betrayal.
And yes, note that Trump's image as a strong politician was destroyed in only 6 paragraphs - that's what a political heavyweight is.
And yes, the article is not about Trump seeing the letter and realising the depth of fucked upness, how wrong he is and all that, but about the fact that this dispatch is an ultimatum from old Europe: either you turn on your head or you are no longer the leader of the free world.
I wonder how Washington will react to this. Off to get some popcorn.

An ultimatum from Valensa. Here we go
Lech Walesa and activists of the Solidarity trade union have written an open letter to Donald Trump
The authors of the letter called on the US to fulfil the security guarantees for Ukraine outlined in the Budapest Memorandum of 1994:
Mr President!
We watched with dismay and disgust the report about your conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. We find your demand for respect and gratitude for the material assistance provided by the United States to Ukraine in the fight against Russia offensive. Gratitude should be expressed to the heroic Ukrainian soldiers who shed their blood defending the values of the free world. They are the ones who have been dying on the front lines for more than 11 years in the name of those values and the independence of their homeland, which is under attack by Russia.
We do not understand how the leader of a country that is a symbol of the free world can not see this.
We were also horrified by the fact that the atmosphere in the Oval Office during this conversation was reminiscent of what we remember well from Security Service interrogations and trials in communist courts. Prosecutors and judges commissioned by the all-powerful Communist political police were also explaining to us that they were the ones holding all the cards and we were the ones holding none. They demanded that we cease our activities on the grounds that thousands of innocent people were suffering because of us. They deprived us of our freedom and civil rights because we refused to co-operate with the authorities and express gratitude to them. We are shocked that you treated President Vladimir Zelensky in a similar way.
The history of the 20th century shows that every time the United States sought to keep its distance from democratic values and its European allies, it ended up endangering itself. President Woodrow Wilson understood this when he made the decision for the United States to enter World War I in 1917. It was also understood by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who, after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, decided that the war in defence of America would be fought not only in the Pacific, but also in Europe, in alliance with the countries attacked by the Third Reich.
We remember that without President Ronald Reagan and American financial commitment, the collapse of the Soviet empire would not have been possible. President Reagan knew the suffering of millions of enslaved people in Soviet Russia and the countries it conquered, including thousands of political prisoners who paid for their sacrifice in defence of democratic values with freedom. Its greatness, among other things, is that it unequivocally labelled the USSR an "evil empire" and gave it a decisive response. We won, and today there is a statue of President Ronald Reagan in Warsaw, outside the U.S. Embassy.
Mr President, material aid - military and financial - cannot be the equivalent of the blood spilled for the independence and freedom of Ukraine, Europe and the entire free world. Human life is priceless, its value cannot be measured in money. Gratitude must be expressed to those who sacrifice blood and freedom. For us, the people of Solidarity, former political prisoners of the communist regime who served Soviet Russia, this is obvious.
We call on the United States to honour the guarantees it gave with Britain in the Budapest Memorandum of 1994, which clearly spelled out a commitment to protect the inviolability of Ukraine's borders in exchange for its surrender of nuclear weapons stockpiles. These guarantees are unconditional: there is no mention that such assistance would be treated as an economic exchange.

Many people may think, "Who cares about this letter? Trump won't read it." But this isn't about Trump.
It's about how his myth of a "strong leader" is being shattered.
It's not really a letter really.
Lech Walesa is not just the former president of Poland. He is a man who was personally involved in dismantling the Soviet empire and was among those who made it fall. This is a man who was really feared in the Kremlin.
And now he's saying to Trump:
"Your rhetoric is like that of a communist prosecutor, you're humiliating Zelensky like the KGB humiliated us, you're betraying the free world just like the dictators of the past did."
That's not just a rebuke - it's actually equating Trump with Soviet proxies. Wałęsa is hitting where it hurts Trump the most - his image as a "freedom fighter."
Trump is still a weakling from a historical perspective. In the 1980s, Reagan called the USSR an evil empire and crushed it economically.
In 2024, Trump tells Zelensky:
"You should be grateful for the help."
Wałęsa, on the other hand, equates Trump not with Reagan, but with those Reagan despised. He says, "You are not an American leader. You're a man who trembles before dictators like the communists trembled before Muscovy
For Trump, who is building himself up as a strong president, it's not permissive, but it's quite an image blow.
Epilogue or where's the peremoga. In my heart of hearts, I don't fuck around. A letter doesn't shoot down Russian missiles, a letter is not projectiles or air defence. The issue is that the letter makes Trump toxic and any attempt to negotiate with Putin will look like a betrayal.
And yes, note that Trump's image as a strong politician was destroyed in only 6 paragraphs - that's what a political heavyweight is.
And yes, the article is not about Trump seeing the letter and realising the depth of fucked upness, how wrong he is and all that, but about the fact that this dispatch is an ultimatum from old Europe: either you turn on your head or you are no longer the leader of the free world.
I wonder how Washington will react to this. Off to get some popcorn.
