British aircraft in Ukraine. Myth or reality?
I read a news item today that the UK is considering deploying air patrols over Ukraine as an alternative to sending in ground troops. It is planned that Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets will patrol Ukrainian airspace after a ceasefire agreement is reached, based in Poland.
This initiative is being discussed against the backdrop of recent US-Russian talks in Saudi Arabia. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the deployment of NATO troops on the territory of Ukraine, regardless of the flag under which they operate, is unacceptable to Moscow. In response, the UK is considering providing security guarantees through an air patrol mission, which would avoid the direct presence of foreign ground forces on the territory of Ukraine.
It is assumed that the air patrol mission will be organised similarly to the existing NATO missions in the Baltic states. As part of this initiative, dozens of British fighter jets will be on constant alert to respond to possible threats.
Earlier, on 16 February, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced London's readiness to deploy British troops to Ukraine to support any peace agreement. However, given Russia's position and the difficulties associated with deploying a large ground contingent, the focus has shifted to air operations.
The discussions also concern the size of the potential peacekeeping contingent. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has noted that approximately 110,000 foreign soldiers are needed to effectively deter Russia. At the same time, some European countries are considering sending a contingent of 25,000 to 30,000 troops, which, according to the Ukrainian military, is insufficient to control the front line of more than 1,000 km.
It should also be noted that these plans are still under discussion and that no final decisions have been made.
Now to the realities, because the headline is loud, but the implementation, with bureaucracy, etc.
In order to implement the plan to deploy air patrols over Ukraine, the UK government has to go through several key decision-making stages:
Initiation and discussion of the proposal - Ministers and senior military officials discuss the possibility of establishing an "air policing" mission similar to the NATO programme operating in the Baltic States.
Cabinet approval - after detailed discussion, the proposal is considered by the government, which decides on the feasibility and extent of UK involvement in the mission.
Parliamentary consideration - although royal prerogatives allow the government to decide on military action without parliamentary approval, such matters are often debated in the House of Commons to gain political support and legitimacy.
International agreements - agreements need to be reached with NATO allies and Ukraine itself on the mission format, rules of engagement and deployment of forces.
Logistical preparations - organising the basing of fighter jets (in Poland), as well as providing the necessary infrastructure and support for patrolling.
The timing, because it's not like ordering a pizza.
The optimistic forecast is that if political decisions are made quickly, international agreements are reached without delays, and the infrastructure is ready, the mission could be deployed within a few months after the peace agreement is signed.
The pessimistic forecast is that if there are delays in political discussions, difficulties in international negotiations or logistical difficulties, this could delay the mission for a year or more

Now, about the aircraft and how many of them the UK can actually provide
As of today, the UK has not announced the exact number of aircraft that could be provided for this mission. However, given the scale of such operations, it can be assumed that we are talking about at least 3-4 dozen fighters with the following technical characteristics
Maximum speed - about 2400 km per hour
Combat radius - about 1390 km without refuelling
Weapons - guided air-to-air, air-to-ground missiles, as well as an integrated cannon
Epilogue or where is the victory here, and if there is any at all. Does the British government's statement mean that the aircraft will be delivered in a week, a month or two months? No, it doesn't.
In fact, the timing is uncertain, it's not happening as fast as we would like (at least for me).
Given Trump's statements, I am pleased that Ukraine did not rely on the number one, which is a far-sighted and pragmatic move. Will the mandated patrols kill Russians (manpower) on the territory of Ukraine?
Will they be authorised to shoot down cruise missiles and aircraft?
Will the Ukrainian Constitution and the British Parliament or legal framework allow them to do so?
Will the appearance of the British Air Force in the airspace of Ukraine mean the beginning of the Third World War? (It has already begun, but fuck it - we pretend we don't know)
Who will pay for all this? This is a very expensive pleasure
Will the British Air Force be allowed to strike at the territory of the Russian Federation and those territories that the Russians consider "theirs"? (Dimon will be drunk then, fuck it)
If the appearance of British planes in Ukrainian airspace only guarantees that the Ukrainian air force will be informed of threats, then I don't see the point of such actions at all

British aircraft in Ukraine. Myth or reality?
I read a news item today that the UK is considering deploying air patrols over Ukraine as an alternative to sending in ground troops. It is planned that Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets will patrol Ukrainian airspace after a ceasefire agreement is reached, based in Poland.
This initiative is being discussed against the backdrop of recent US-Russian talks in Saudi Arabia. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the deployment of NATO troops on the territory of Ukraine, regardless of the flag under which they operate, is unacceptable to Moscow. In response, the UK is considering providing security guarantees through an air patrol mission, which would avoid the direct presence of foreign ground forces on the territory of Ukraine.
It is assumed that the air patrol mission will be organised similarly to the existing NATO missions in the Baltic states. As part of this initiative, dozens of British fighter jets will be on constant alert to respond to possible threats.
Earlier, on 16 February, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced London's readiness to deploy British troops to Ukraine to support any peace agreement. However, given Russia's position and the difficulties associated with deploying a large ground contingent, the focus has shifted to air operations.
The discussions also concern the size of the potential peacekeeping contingent. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has noted that approximately 110,000 foreign soldiers are needed to effectively deter Russia. At the same time, some European countries are considering sending a contingent of 25,000 to 30,000 troops, which, according to the Ukrainian military, is insufficient to control the front line of more than 1,000 km.
It should also be noted that these plans are still under discussion and that no final decisions have been made.
Now to the realities, because the headline is loud, but the implementation, with bureaucracy, etc.
In order to implement the plan to deploy air patrols over Ukraine, the UK government has to go through several key decision-making stages:
Initiation and discussion of the proposal - Ministers and senior military officials discuss the possibility of establishing an "air policing" mission similar to the NATO programme operating in the Baltic States.
Cabinet approval - after detailed discussion, the proposal is considered by the government, which decides on the feasibility and extent of UK involvement in the mission.
Parliamentary consideration - although royal prerogatives allow the government to decide on military action without parliamentary approval, such matters are often debated in the House of Commons to gain political support and legitimacy.
International agreements - agreements need to be reached with NATO allies and Ukraine itself on the mission format, rules of engagement and deployment of forces.
Logistical preparations - organising the basing of fighter jets (in Poland), as well as providing the necessary infrastructure and support for patrolling.
The timing, because it's not like ordering a pizza.
The optimistic forecast is that if political decisions are made quickly, international agreements are reached without delays, and the infrastructure is ready, the mission could be deployed within a few months after the peace agreement is signed.
The pessimistic forecast is that if there are delays in political discussions, difficulties in international negotiations or logistical difficulties, this could delay the mission for a year or more
Where did this all come from and what is Britain's role in it? Let us recall the news that we have been reading for ages - Ukraine and the UK have recently signed an agreement on a centenary partnership
Bucket, the signing of this treaty, this initiative is actually the first step to strengthen security in the region + as you can imagine, the deployment of air patrols will demonstrate real strong support for Ukraine and the desire to ensure a stable peace in Eastern Europe.
Now, about the aircraft and how many of them the UK can actually provide
As of today, the UK has not announced the exact number of aircraft that could be provided for this mission. However, given the scale of such operations, it can be assumed that we are talking about at least 3-4 dozen fighters with the following technical characteristics
Maximum speed - about 2400 km per hour
Combat radius - about 1390 km without refuelling
Weapons - guided air-to-air, air-to-ground missiles, as well as an integrated cannon
Epilogue or where is the victory here, and if there is any at all. Does the British government's statement mean that the aircraft will be delivered in a week, a month or two months? No, it doesn't.
In fact, the timing is uncertain, it's not happening as fast as we would like (at least for me).
Given Trump's statements, I am pleased that Ukraine did not rely on the number one, which is a far-sighted and pragmatic move. One is a bad number, you need to have insurance in case one of your partners comes to power as a fucker (by the way, there are more of them - in Croatia, a local pro-Kraut Orban won) who will start talking openly pro-Russian bullshit
Honestly, I don't know whose merit it is, Zelenskyy's or Zaluzhnyy's, in signing the agreement on a centenary partnership with Britain - I don't care who did it, as long as it works, and they can fight over the regalia among themselves
The question is whether such an initiative looks real and can be implemented if there is political will
For example, Luxembourg's airspace is patrolled by the Belgian Air Force, Slovenia's by the Hungarian or Italian Air Force, and Albania's by the Italian or Greek Air Force. Iceland, which is a NATO member but does not have its own air force, is also a member. After the withdrawal of the US military from Keflavik Air Base in 2006, Iceland asked its NATO allies to periodically send fighter jets to monitor its airspace. The first such deployment took place in May 2008
One such example of non-NATO air policing is the air policing mission over North Macedonia. Prior to the country's accession to NATO in 2020, its airspace was patrolled by fighter jets from allies, including Greece and Italy, at the request of the North Macedonian government. This ensured the safety of the country's airspace until it officially joined the Alliance
But let's get back to the realities. The reality is that all of this is still a raw statement - until discussions begin at the governmental level, at the official level
The next question is the mandate, the powers of the air patrols, because I personally do not understand the mission of patrolling:
Will the mandated patrols kill Russians (manpower) on the territory of Ukraine?
Will they be authorised to shoot down cruise missiles and aircraft?
Will the Ukrainian Constitution and the British Parliament or legal framework allow them to do so?
Will the appearance of the British Air Force in the airspace of Ukraine mean the beginning of the Third World War? (It has already begun, but fuck it - we pretend we don't know)
Who will pay for all this? This is a very expensive pleasure
Will the British Air Force be allowed to strike at the territory of the Russian Federation and those territories that the Russians consider "theirs"? (Dimon will be drunk then, fuck it)
If the appearance of British planes in Ukrainian airspace only guarantees that the Ukrainian air force will be informed of threats, then I don't see the point of such actions at all
In short, in practice, everything is not as simple as it seems
