Ilona and the bears. Longread on utopia
I read a rather interesting article in ElPais about the behaviour of Ilona's friend. I quote the article in full:
"Elon Musk is bear bait.
The millionaire is implementing the same plan in the government that he implemented in X, as if it worked well."
"Grafton is a small town in New Hampshire, in the northeastern United States, with a population of about 1,400. Since 2004, it has been the subject of a political experiment to transform the municipality into an anarcho-capitalist paradise. The initiators hoped that the whole country would understand that taxes are theft, that government intervention leads to poverty, and that it is better to leave everything to private initiative.
Musk has spent several weeks eliminating everything he considers unnecessary, such as aid to poor countries, funding for medical and scientific research, support for military veterans... But without (so far) touching the government contracts of Musk's companies. As the Fortune magazine headline shared on BlueSky by journalist Michael J. Stern summed it up: "Some public officials are enriching themselves at taxpayers' expense, says Elon Musk, whose companies have received at least $20 billion from the government."
The plan is similar to the one he implemented at Twitter: after buying the social network, he laid off 80% of its employees. But there are at least two problems with this: first, the best thing that can be said about X is that it still works (and that's a lot). But even if we ignore the problems of harassment and bias, the operation has not been a success story. According to the fund manager Fidelity, since 2022, X has lost 70% of its value.
It may have paid off for Musk, given where he is now - in the White House, but from a business perspective, the purchase was a disaster. It's as if I fell on the street, broke my nose and found a 200-euro note on the ground. I may have done well, but I can't say that the best way to make money is to break your nose.
The second problem is that Musk behaves as if he is creating a techno-anarcho-capitalist utopia, a drugged-up, chainsaw-wielding Grafton in which the decisions of the leaders are more important than democracy. And this, apart from ethical conflicts and possible illegality, is not a good idea. In his book The Open Society and Its Enemies, Karl Popper reminds us that the danger of utopias is not that their goal is unrealisable (for example, democracy seemed impossible a few centuries ago), but that they propose a complete reconstruction of society. This has "practical implications that are difficult to calculate, given our limited experience".
This is exactly what happened in Grafton. None of the supporters of this libertarian initiative thought that the elimination of public services would attract bears. But social problems - like X problems - are very complex, much more complex than designing a reusable rocket or an electric car. This is not about abandoning big ideas: Popper suggests that we should make progress little by little. This allows us to test the consequences of our decisions and correct them if necessary.
In addition, a company and a country are not the same thing. The public sector should not throw money down the drain, but it can afford to support ideas that we do not yet know whether they will be successful or stupid. Silicon Valley entrepreneurs don't often mention the origins of the Internet, which is in the public domain: it started as a project of the US Department of Defence and a few universities. As technology and design researcher Casey Klimes ironically writes in his book X, if DOGE had existed in 1969, Elon Musk would have killed the initiative: "We're spending a million taxpayer dollars so that professors can text each other?"
So, after reading the article, I decided to find out what Grafton was, what bears had to do with it, and what happened there that one of the central Spanish publications cited this city or town as an example
And I did find it. A whole article. And again I quote it in full, because it's worth it
"This is the story of how a group of dreamers killed a city that had existed for two and a half centuries in a little more than fifteen years. And, of course, it's about bears.
Tracy
Tracy Colburn came home from work that evening tired. She decided that before she collapsed and fell asleep without a care in the world, she needed to feed her dog. So she started to heat up a meat stew. When the dog asked to go outside, she decided to let him out. But when she opened the door, she found three bears on her small porch. Before Tracy could do anything, her dog Kai ran out onto the porch and immediately attacked the largest animal. A fight ensued, and the bear and dog rolled down the stairs. The wild animal tried to paw at Kai, but he deftly dodged and bit him on the backside.
The woman knew that bears are usually afraid of loud shouting, so she screamed with all her might. In a normal situation, this might have helped, but the bear had no alternative: it had a biting dog behind it and Tracy in front of it. The animal lunged at her. Tracy raised her arms to defend herself, and the bear crushed one of her arms with one powerful clawed paw and badly scratched her side. The woman fell towards the door, and it slammed shut behind her, leaving her face to face with the furious predator.
Then everything happened like in slow motion, but finally, the bear ran away into the forest, chased by the dog. Kai returned, tail wagging happily, proud of his feat. Tracy's mood was far from happy. She had lost a lot of blood and definitely could not wait until morning.
One of the distinctive features of the town of Grafton, where these events took place, was that there was no mobile phone service. Therefore, the woman could only crawl to her car and get behind the wheel. She was unable to drive away because the car was equipped with a manual transmission, and her right arm was torn to pieces. The only thing left to do was to press the horn with her left hand, hoping that someone walking or driving by would notice her.
The history of Grafton and New Hampshire's black bear population go hand in hand. When the first colonists came here at the end of the 18th century, the animals were quite enthusiastic about it. They watched with interest as the white monkeys roasted pieces of beef over the fire, and when they were particularly hungry, they did not mind eating both the beef and the white monkeys themselves. Animals did this more than once, and people responded with violence, but neither side won.
The British crown did not care about Grafton and the bears, but it did care about the taxes that the town's residents had to pay to the treasury. That is why the colonists greeted the revolution with enthusiasm, not expecting, of course, that the new government would deprive them of bears, but believing that they would not have to pay taxes.
Their expectations were not met, and the outraged residents of Grafton began to write petitions to the federal authorities, which boiled down to two theses: "we don't want to pay taxes because it is very difficult for us to live" and "we will not pay taxes". And they did not. Moreover, in 1781, the then-independent state of Vermont invited them under its wing, promising not to stutter about taxation. The townspeople gladly voted to secede from New Hampshire.
George Washington, who had heard the news of what was happening, put an end to this issue. He declared that he would "suspend the struggle against the common enemy [the British Empire]" and return all his forces to "raze this state to the ground". Grafton had to back down, but the desire to avoid paying taxes has remained a feature of Graftonians throughout history.
The neighbouring town of Canaan was in almost the same situation as Grafton. It's not that Kanaan is a tax-loving town, but the citizens and local authorities made their choice one way or another.
They decided that public infrastructure was a necessary thing and spent money from the city budget to create it. Grafton did the opposite. In the "fat" year of 1881, the city assembly voted to completely abolish the payment of taxes by residents.
However, for some reason, things did not go the way they had envisaged. Until the 1930s, the town had neither firefighters nor a fire station, despite the fact that Grafton residents regularly died in fires. There was also no police station, and law enforcement officers had to conduct interrogations in their homes. And it is worth noting that all of this was not possible precisely because of the will of the people of Grafton, who voted with enviable persistence against any expenditures from the municipal budget. The lack of infrastructure did not attract new residents from outside either.
By 2010, it turned out that the municipal tax in the two settlements did not differ much: the owner of a house worth $150,000 paid $930 a year in Kanaan and $673 in Grafton. Indeed, despite the significantly higher costs of public infrastructure, the population of Kanaan was larger than that of Grafton and had an elementary school, several churches, restaurants, banks, a gift shop, two bakeries, etc.
Utopia and "battles of the homeless"
But in the early 2000s, there were people who liked the Graftonians' approach. These were four new settlers: John Babiarz, Tim Condon, Larry Pendarvis and Bob Gall. All of them were adherents of the libertarian ideology described by Ayn Rand in her novel Atlas Shrugged. They all dreamed of a society in which there were virtually no regulations and taxes, everything was governed by the "invisible hand of the market", and individual motivations were always higher than social ones. This is the kind of society they were going to build in Grafton, which they chose for obvious reasons. This was the beginning of the Free City project.
If everything went as planned, hundreds of like-minded people would rush to the settlement, who, by joining forces through democratic elections, would be able to abolish a bunch of stupid and unnecessary regulations that enslave ordinary people (this is how Pendarvis described the initiative on one of the libertarian forums on the Internet).Among the inalienable rights, the activist listed the possibility of having more than two broken-down cars on his private property, the right to gamble, the right of students to skip school, the right to transport drugs and engage in incest. The libertarian also demanded to allow the transport of human organs, duels and, finally, "battles of the homeless" - when two citizens could give money to homeless people to fight each other. And, of course, cannibalism.
Initially, the locals took the newcomers positively - they shared a common way of thinking: both disliked taxes. However, it soon became clear that the Grafton residents did not like the vigorous activity of the Libertarian Party, and wild statements about cannibalism, duels and fights among the homeless turned them away from the newcomers even more. The founders of the Free City project did not lose heart after receiving a harsh rebuff from the townspeople. They just decided that only their opponents came to the meetings where they tried to push their ideology. But, probably, the majority of people who support their initiative are just sitting at home and waiting for things to get better.
It was decided to stay in Grafton rather than look for a better place for the project. Thus, a pilgrimage of libertarians began to come to the city, inspired by the call that the four founders of the initiative left online. Some of them came with money and families, ready to buy a house and settle down. But for some reason, most of them turned out to be single men with no money in their pockets. They settled on the outskirts of the city, in trailer parks, tents and cabins of their motorhomes.
Among them, however, were not only libertarians - there were also preppers (people preparing to survive the apocalypse), communist anarchists, and God knows who else.
All this motley crew was united by a love of absolute freedom and a hatred of the state. The struggle against regulation in Grafton was a fierce one, although it would seem that it could have gone much further. The libertarians demanded that their right to pollute their property as they pleased, to build fires in a fire hazard zone - again, if it was their property - and generally to do whatever they wanted to do, be recognised. In addition, many of them are used to carrying weapons in public, making the locals nervous. This is not to say that anyone in the city could be surprised by a pistol, rifle or even a machine gun. However, the unspoken code of the Graftonians did not allow flaunting them. Weapons were intended for utilitarian purposes. If a bear came, a person needed to have something with which to respond to the animal if it behaved aggressively
Libertarians sued for any reason - and there were plenty of reasons. They believed that everything was going more or less well, and that they just needed to achieve even more freedom, which required getting rid of the last regulations. But there were also people among them who tried to reason with the most extreme individuals.
One of them was John Babiarz. In the early years, when there was no one to maintain the town's only fire engine, he became a Grafton firefighter. Moreover, he once responded to a call from one of his colleagues and poured water on a fire that he was burning in the wrong place, despite the dry weather. This was unheard of, and the anarcho-capitalist community began to burst at the seams.
While the lovers of freedom tried to mould Grafton into their own utopia, the bears realised that the people's dreams had indeed come true - only for them, not for the people. At first, the new settlers did not notice them, but gradually the bears' presence became more and more noticeable. They started digging through garbage cans and the trailer park's dumpster, plundering beehives and licking the fat off grills in the backyards of houses. They also fell in love with cats - not to pet, but to eat.
At that time, there was a drought, which, by the way, affected the bears as well. Food became scarce, and therefore, the animals began to look for it even more carefully from people. One libertarian woman who fed birds with sunflower seeds discovered that bears were ravaging the feeders. One day, she saw a bear in her yard - it was very thin and emaciated.
So the woman, who many later came to know as the Donut Lady, began to take out another bucket of grain for these animals. But the animals were very quick to eat it, and so soon she began to put out two, three, four buckets. The animals were hungry, and the Donut Lady could not refuse them. She would add several dozen cheap donuts to the buckets of grain, which earned her the nickname. No wonder the bears began to spend days and nights near the feeders.
Other libertarians also deliberately fed bears. When the US Fish and Wildlife Service fined a man named Charlie Vanderhoe $20,000 for feeding bears, libertarians were outraged.
"They don't think about protecting animals, they only exist to fine people who love animals," one of them said at the time.The first thing that came to the minds of the preppers and other residents of the tent city was to put up a poster saying "No Bears Allowed" near the bin where they dumped their rubbish. It was unlikely that the bears could read, but what the hell. Nevertheless, the poster helped to raise the spirit in the camp. Many "survivalists" stocked up on large-calibre pistols and, looking at the inscription, convinced themselves that it was not they who were on bear territory, but the bears on their land.
Shooting in the forest
Tracy Colburn became the first bear attack victim in Grafton in a hundred years.
In the weeks and months that followed, both native Graftonians and Free City residents searched for the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, the city, whose government structures had been almost completely deprived of funding by the Libertarians, was plunging into chaos. Attempts at burglary, as well as drug trafficking and use, became more frequent. Soon, the first murder in a long time was committed in Grafton. The Donut Lady and other libertarians continued to feed the bears, and something definitely needed to be done about the population. A few hunters got together and conducted an illegal raid on the dens. But it didn't help for long.
The bears soon returned, but the number of libertarians dropped dramatically. Tracy Colburn, who was rescued by John Babiarz, who was passing by when he heard her pressing the signal with her healthy hand, left town as soon as her wounds healed. Others followed her. Not all of them have survived to this day. Some were shot and killed in a dispute, others burned down in their homes before the firemen from Kanaan could arrive, and Bob Gall, one of the first settlers, died of cancer.
A sad fate also befell the eccentric libertarian pastor John Connell, who bought a church from the Methodists for a pittance. For a long time, he refused to pay taxes on it - and he could have done so with a clear conscience by applying to the US Tax Administration for recognition of the church as a non-profit organisation. However, the new pastor could not afford to do so, as he believed that deals with the authorities were unacceptable. The premises were almost taken away for debt, but the lack of a fire department played a bad joke: the church burned down with him a few days before the eviction date.
All of this played a role, but the death of the Free City project was even more influenced by the new Free State project. If Grafton used to attract everyone who wanted to feel like a shoulder-shrugging Atlantan, now, thanks to other libertarian activists, it has become the entire state of New Hampshire.
One of the new places of attraction for libertarians was the town of Keene, where the municipal property tax was three times higher than in Grafton, but it had a baseball team, tennis, baseball and playgrounds, a historic colonial theatre, mowed lawns and trees in parks, and a neighbourhood with entertainment and educational facilities funded by taxpayers. Gradually, as a result, Grafton became empty."

Ilona and the bears. Longread on utopia
I read a rather interesting article in ElPais about the behaviour of Ilona's friend. I quote the article in full:
"Elon Musk is bear bait.
The millionaire is implementing the same plan in the government that he implemented in X, as if it worked well."
"Grafton is a small town in New Hampshire, in the northeastern United States, with a population of about 1,400. Since 2004, it has been the subject of a political experiment to transform the municipality into an anarcho-capitalist paradise. The initiators hoped that the whole country would understand that taxes are theft, that government intervention leads to poverty, and that it is better to leave everything to private initiative.
Musk has spent several weeks eliminating everything he considers unnecessary, such as aid to poor countries, funding for medical and scientific research, support for military veterans... But without (so far) touching the government contracts of Musk's companies. As the Fortune magazine headline shared on BlueSky by journalist Michael J. Stern summed it up: "Some public officials are enriching themselves at taxpayers' expense, says Elon Musk, whose companies have received at least $20 billion from the government."
The plan is similar to the one he implemented at Twitter: after buying the social network, he laid off 80% of its employees. But there are at least two problems with this: first, the best thing that can be said about X is that it still works (and that's a lot). But even if we ignore the problems of harassment and bias, the operation has not been a success story. According to the fund manager Fidelity, since 2022, X has lost 70% of its value.
It may have paid off for Musk, given where he is now - in the White House, but from a business perspective, the purchase was a disaster. It's as if I fell on the street, broke my nose and found a 200-euro note on the ground. I may have done well, but I can't say that the best way to make money is to break your nose.
The second problem is that Musk behaves as if he is creating a techno-anarcho-capitalist utopia, a drugged-up, chainsaw-wielding Grafton in which the decisions of the leaders are more important than democracy. And this, apart from ethical conflicts and possible illegality, is not a good idea. In his book The Open Society and Its Enemies, Karl Popper reminds us that the danger of utopias is not that their goal is unrealisable (for example, democracy seemed impossible a few centuries ago), but that they propose a complete reconstruction of society. This has "practical implications that are difficult to calculate, given our limited experience".
This is exactly what happened in Grafton. None of the supporters of this libertarian initiative thought that the elimination of public services would attract bears. But social problems - like X problems - are very complex, much more complex than designing a reusable rocket or an electric car. This is not about abandoning big ideas: Popper suggests that we should make progress little by little. This allows us to test the consequences of our decisions and correct them if necessary.
In addition, a company and a country are not the same thing. The public sector should not throw money down the drain, but it can afford to support ideas that we do not yet know whether they will be successful or stupid. Silicon Valley entrepreneurs don't often mention the origins of the Internet, which is in the public domain: it started as a project of the US Department of Defence and a few universities. As technology and design researcher Casey Klimes ironically writes in his book X, if DOGE had existed in 1969, Elon Musk would have killed the initiative: "We're spending a million taxpayer dollars so that professors can text each other?"
So, after reading the article, I decided to find out what Grafton was, what bears had to do with it, and what happened there that one of the central Spanish publications cited this city or town as an example
And I did find it. A whole article. And again I quote it in full, because it's worth it
"This is the story of how a group of dreamers killed a city that had existed for two and a half centuries in a little more than fifteen years. And, of course, it's about bears.
Tracy
Tracy Colburn came home from work that evening tired. She decided that before she collapsed and fell asleep without a care in the world, she needed to feed her dog. So she started to heat up a meat stew. When the dog asked to go outside, she decided to let him out. But when she opened the door, she found three bears on her small porch. Before Tracy could do anything, her dog Kai ran out onto the porch and immediately attacked the largest animal. A fight ensued, and the bear and dog rolled down the stairs. The wild animal tried to paw at Kai, but he deftly dodged and bit him on the backside.
The woman knew that bears are usually afraid of loud shouting, so she screamed with all her might. In a normal situation, this might have helped, but the bear had no alternative: it had a biting dog behind it and Tracy in front of it. The animal lunged at her. Tracy raised her arms to defend herself, and the bear crushed one of her arms with one powerful clawed paw and badly scratched her side. The woman fell towards the door, and it slammed shut behind her, leaving her face to face with the furious predator.
Then everything happened like in slow motion, but finally, the bear ran away into the forest, chased by the dog. Kai returned, tail wagging happily, proud of his feat. Tracy's mood was far from happy. She had lost a lot of blood and definitely could not wait until morning.
One of the distinctive features of the town of Grafton, where these events took place, was that there was no mobile phone service. Therefore, the woman could only crawl to her car and get behind the wheel. She was unable to drive away because the car was equipped with a manual transmission, and her right arm was torn to pieces. The only thing left to do was to press the horn with her left hand, hoping that someone walking or driving by would notice her.
The history of Grafton and New Hampshire's black bear population go hand in hand. When the first colonists came here at the end of the 18th century, the animals were quite enthusiastic about it. They watched with interest as the white monkeys roasted pieces of beef over the fire, and when they were particularly hungry, they did not mind eating both the beef and the white monkeys themselves. Animals did this more than once, and people responded with violence, but neither side won.
The British crown did not care about Grafton and the bears, but it did care about the taxes that the town's residents had to pay to the treasury. That is why the colonists greeted the revolution with enthusiasm, not expecting, of course, that the new government would deprive them of bears, but believing that they would not have to pay taxes.
Their expectations were not met, and the outraged residents of Grafton began to write petitions to the federal authorities, which boiled down to two theses: "we don't want to pay taxes because it is very difficult for us to live" and "we will not pay taxes". And they did not. Moreover, in 1781, the then-independent state of Vermont invited them under its wing, promising not to stutter about taxation. The townspeople gladly voted to secede from New Hampshire.
George Washington, who had heard the news of what was happening, put an end to this issue. He declared that he would "suspend the struggle against the common enemy [the British Empire]" and return all his forces to "raze this state to the ground". Grafton had to back down, but the desire to avoid paying taxes has remained a feature of Graftonians throughout history.
The neighbouring town of Canaan was in almost the same situation as Grafton. It's not that Kanaan is a tax-loving town, but the citizens and local authorities made their choice one way or another.
They decided that public infrastructure was a necessary thing and spent money from the city budget to create it. Grafton did the opposite. In the "fat" year of 1881, the city assembly voted to completely abolish the payment of taxes by residents.
However, for some reason, things did not go the way they had envisaged. Until the 1930s, the town had neither firefighters nor a fire station, despite the fact that Grafton residents regularly died in fires. There was also no police station, and law enforcement officers had to conduct interrogations in their homes. And it is worth noting that all of this was not possible precisely because of the will of the people of Grafton, who voted with enviable persistence against any expenditures from the municipal budget. The lack of infrastructure did not attract new residents from outside either.
By 2010, it turned out that the municipal tax in the two settlements did not differ much: the owner of a house worth $150,000 paid $930 a year in Kanaan and $673 in Grafton. Indeed, despite the significantly higher costs of public infrastructure, the population of Kanaan was larger than that of Grafton and had an elementary school, several churches, restaurants, banks, a gift shop, two bakeries, etc.
Utopia and "battles of the homeless"
But in the early 2000s, there were people who liked the Graftonians' approach. These were four new settlers: John Babiarz, Tim Condon, Larry Pendarvis and Bob Gall. All of them were adherents of the libertarian ideology described by Ayn Rand in her novel Atlas Shrugged. They all dreamed of a society in which there were virtually no regulations and taxes, everything was governed by the "invisible hand of the market", and individual motivations were always higher than social ones. This is the kind of society they were going to build in Grafton, which they chose for obvious reasons. This was the beginning of the Free City project.
If everything went as planned, hundreds of like-minded people would rush to the settlement, who, by joining forces through democratic elections, would be able to abolish a bunch of stupid and unnecessary regulations that enslave ordinary people (this is how Pendarvis described the initiative on one of the libertarian forums on the Internet).Among the inalienable rights, the activist listed the possibility of having more than two broken-down cars on his private property, the right to gamble, the right of students to skip school, the right to transport drugs and engage in incest. The libertarian also demanded to allow the transport of human organs, duels and, finally, "battles of the homeless" - when two citizens could give money to homeless people to fight each other. And, of course, cannibalism.
Initially, the locals took the newcomers positively - they shared a common way of thinking: both disliked taxes. However, it soon became clear that the Grafton residents did not like the vigorous activity of the Libertarian Party, and wild statements about cannibalism, duels and fights among the homeless turned them away from the newcomers even more. The founders of the Free City project did not lose heart after receiving a harsh rebuff from the townspeople. They just decided that only their opponents came to the meetings where they tried to push their ideology. But, probably, the majority of people who support their initiative are just sitting at home and waiting for things to get better.
It was decided to stay in Grafton rather than look for a better place for the project. Thus, a pilgrimage of libertarians began to come to the city, inspired by the call that the four founders of the initiative left online. Some of them came with money and families, ready to buy a house and settle down. But for some reason, most of them turned out to be single men with no money in their pockets. They settled on the outskirts of the city, in trailer parks, tents and cabins of their motorhomes.
Among them, however, were not only libertarians - there were also preppers (people preparing to survive the apocalypse), communist anarchists, and God knows who else.
All this motley crew was united by a love of absolute freedom and a hatred of the state. The struggle against regulation in Grafton was a fierce one, although it would seem that it could have gone much further. The libertarians demanded that their right to pollute their property as they pleased, to build fires in a fire hazard zone - again, if it was their property - and generally to do whatever they wanted to do, be recognised. In addition, many of them are used to carrying weapons in public, making the locals nervous. This is not to say that anyone in the city could be surprised by a pistol, rifle or even a machine gun. However, the unspoken code of the Graftonians did not allow flaunting them. Weapons were intended for utilitarian purposes. If a bear came, a person needed to have something with which to respond to the animal if it behaved aggressively
Libertarians sued for any reason - and there were plenty of reasons. They believed that everything was going more or less well, and that they just needed to achieve even more freedom, which required getting rid of the last regulations. But there were also people among them who tried to reason with the most extreme individuals.
One of them was John Babiarz. In the early years, when there was no one to maintain the town's only fire engine, he became a Grafton firefighter. Moreover, he once responded to a call from one of his colleagues and poured water on a fire that he was burning in the wrong place, despite the dry weather. This was unheard of, and the anarcho-capitalist community began to burst at the seams.
While the lovers of freedom tried to mould Grafton into their own utopia, the bears realised that the people's dreams had indeed come true - only for them, not for the people. At first, the new settlers did not notice them, but gradually the bears' presence became more and more noticeable. They started digging through garbage cans and the trailer park's dumpster, plundering beehives and licking the fat off grills in the backyards of houses. They also fell in love with cats - not to pet, but to eat.
At that time, there was a drought, which, by the way, affected the bears as well. Food became scarce, and therefore, the animals began to look for it even more carefully from people. One libertarian woman who fed birds with sunflower seeds discovered that bears were ravaging the feeders. One day, she saw a bear in her yard - it was very thin and emaciated.
So the woman, who many later came to know as the Donut Lady, began to take out another bucket of grain for these animals. But the animals were very quick to eat it, and so soon she began to put out two, three, four buckets. The animals were hungry, and the Donut Lady could not refuse them. She would add several dozen cheap donuts to the buckets of grain, which earned her the nickname. No wonder the bears began to spend days and nights near the feeders.
Other libertarians also deliberately fed bears. When the US Fish and Wildlife Service fined a man named Charlie Vanderhoe $20,000 for feeding bears, libertarians were outraged.
"They don't think about protecting animals, they only exist to fine people who love animals," one of them said at the time.The first thing that came to the minds of the preppers and other residents of the tent city was to put up a poster saying "No Bears Allowed" near the bin where they dumped their rubbish. It was unlikely that the bears could read, but what the hell. Nevertheless, the poster helped to raise the spirit in the camp. Many "survivalists" stocked up on large-calibre pistols and, looking at the inscription, convinced themselves that it was not they who were on bear territory, but the bears on their land.
Shooting in the forest
Tracy Colburn became the first bear attack victim in Grafton in a hundred years.
In the weeks and months that followed, both native Graftonians and Free City residents searched for the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, the city, whose government structures had been almost completely deprived of funding by the Libertarians, was plunging into chaos. Attempts at burglary, as well as drug trafficking and use, became more frequent. Soon, the first murder in a long time was committed in Grafton. The Donut Lady and other libertarians continued to feed the bears, and something definitely needed to be done about the population. A few hunters got together and conducted an illegal raid on the dens. But it didn't help for long.
The bears soon returned, but the number of libertarians dropped dramatically. Tracy Colburn, who was rescued by John Babiarz, who was passing by when he heard her pressing the signal with her healthy hand, left town as soon as her wounds healed. Others followed her. Not all of them have survived to this day. Some were shot and killed in a dispute, others burned down in their homes before the firemen from Kanaan could arrive, and Bob Gall, one of the first settlers, died of cancer.
A sad fate also befell the eccentric libertarian pastor John Connell, who bought a church from the Methodists for a pittance. For a long time, he refused to pay taxes on it - and he could have done so with a clear conscience by applying to the US Tax Administration for recognition of the church as a non-profit organisation. However, the new pastor could not afford to do so, as he believed that deals with the authorities were unacceptable. The premises were almost taken away for debt, but the lack of a fire department played a bad joke: the church burned down with him a few days before the eviction date.
All of this played a role, but the death of the Free City project was even more influenced by the new Free State project. If Grafton used to attract everyone who wanted to feel like a shoulder-shrugging Atlantan, now, thanks to other libertarian activists, it has become the entire state of New Hampshire.
One of the new places of attraction for libertarians was the town of Keene, where the municipal property tax was three times higher than in Grafton, but it had a baseball team, tennis, baseball and playgrounds, a historic colonial theatre, mowed lawns and trees in parks, and a neighbourhood with entertainment and educational facilities funded by taxpayers. Gradually, as a result, Grafton became empty."
